Kaiako Notes

This unit is designed around genuine student inquiry — the society design challenge has no single right answer, which creates space for productive disagreement. Let student groups struggle with the fundamental question of who gets to decide before introducing frameworks. The curriculum alignment section links to Phase 2 civics concepts (laws, rights, governance) that the design task makes concrete and personally meaningful for ākonga.

Te Ao Māori should be integrated throughout, not bolted on at week 5. Hapū-based consensus governance is as valid a model as parliamentary democracy — ensure ākonga encounter both as serious design options. Differentiate through group role assignment: students can lead different aspects (economy, rights, culture) based on strength area.

📊 Assessment

Formative — across Lessons 1–5 the design builds in stages; check understanding at each: a defensible governance model (L3), a rights-and-economy plan that fits it (L4), and cultural integration that ties the society together (L5). Group planning notes and checkpoint feedback show progress.

Summative — the completed society design, presented and defended in Lesson 6 (Presentations & Peer Review). Assess coherence across dimensions, quality of justification, collaboration, and the give-and-take of peer feedback.

🚀 Extension Activities

Three tiers on the same society-design inquiry:

  • Supported: Focus on one dimension of your society (e.g., governance) and explain your choices clearly. Deliverable: a one-dimension design with rationale.
  • Core: Design a coherent society across all dimensions and justify how they fit together. Deliverable: a full society design.
  • Stretch: Stress-test your society against a real challenge (resource shortage, conflict) and redesign in response. Deliverable: a revised design with analysis.

Entry-level learners: Provide a design template with one section per dimension and sentence starters for justification; assign clear, predictable group roles.

ELL / ESOL: Pre-teach key vocabulary (governance, economy, rights, culture); use visual organisers; allow home-language planning talk before writing.

Accelerated learners: Compare competing models within a dimension and defend the trade-offs; lead the group's synthesis across dimensions.

Guided inquiry is the pedagogical architecture that links established knowledge to genuine question-asking. Three researchers explain why it requires a fundamentally different relationship between teacher and learner.

Social Constructivism
Lev Vygotsky
Vygotsky’s understanding of scaffolded release — from fully guided to jointly constructed to independently managed — is the structural logic of guided inquiry. The teacher’s role moves from model to coach to audience across the inquiry arc. Each phase of the unit asks students to do more of the intellectual work; the scaffold is the teacher’s decreasing direction, not increasing content delivery.
Decolonising Research
Linda Tuhiwai Smith
Smith’s decolonising research framework — asking whose questions are being investigated, whose methods are valued, and whose knowledge counts as evidence — transforms inquiry from a neutral skill into a critical practice. Students who learn to ask “who funded this research?” and “whose voices are absent from this data?” are developing the inquiry literacy that academic and civic life requires.
Progressive Education
John Dewey
Dewey’s distinction between “genuine” and “pseudo” inquiry — the former driven by real uncertainty the student cares about, the latter by predetermined conclusions dressed as questions — is the quality gate for this unit. An inquiry question must have a non-obvious answer for the student investigating it. Where the student already knows the conclusion before starting, there is no inquiry, only performance.
