Method Repeatability Prompt:

"If Step 3 in your method says 'Put some weed in water and wait a bit,' why will an NCEA assessor reject it?"

Unpack: Vague instructions mean another student cannot replicate your test. A valid method specifies exact quantities: "Cut a 7cm sprig of Elodea aquatic plant underwater, place it cut-stem-up in a 250mL beaker filled with 0.2% sodium bicarbonate solution, and allow 3 minutes to acclimatize."

4 Golden Rules for Level 1 Science Practical Methods (15 min)

1. Equipment & Quantities

List precise volumes (mL), lengths (mm/cm), concentrations (%), and apparatus (beaker size, lamp wattage).

2. Step-by-Step Sequence

Use numbered imperative steps (1. Measure, 2. Place, 3. Start stopwatch...). Include acclimatization times.

3. Repeat Trials (Reliability)

State explicitly: "Repeat the measurement 3 times for each of the 5 IV levels to calculate a reliable mean."

4. Safety & Risk Mitigation

Identify hazards (e.g. water near lamp = shock risk; cut glass = cut risk) and state exact safety precautions.

Students open their Level 1 Science Logbook and complete Section 4:

Section 4 Requirements:

1. Equipment List: Detailed list of all glassware, measuring tools, and biological materials.

2. Numbered Method Steps: Complete 8–12 step procedure describing setup, IV manipulation, DV recording, and CV maintenance.

3. Repeat Protocol: Explicit rule detailing 3+ trials per IV level for reliability.

4. Safety Table: 2 hazard mitigations (Hazard → Risk → Prevention).
