Unpack: Statement B is testable because it names a specific environmental factor (light intensity) and a measurable biological response (oxygen bubble rate per minute). Statement A is an opinion.

3 Authentic Investigation Contexts in Aotearoa (15 min)

🌿 Context A: Photosynthesis in Local Awa Plants

Investigate how light intensity or water temperature affects the rate of photosynthesis (bubble production) in aquatic plants (e.g. Elodea or native Myriophyllum).

🌱 Context B: Seed Germination & Soil Moisture

Investigate how soil moisture or salinity affects the germination rate of harakeke (Phormium tenax) or crop seeds over a 10-day period.

🍞 Context C: Yeast Cellular Respiration

Investigate how temperature or sugar concentration affects CO₂ gas production in yeast, connecting to fermentation in traditional rongoā and food preservation.

📁 Biological Investigation Logbook — Section 1: Biological Question & Context

Students open their Level 1 Science Logbook and complete Section 1:

Section 1 Requirements:

1. Chosen Biological Context: State which context you will investigate (Photosynthesis, Germination, or Respiration).

2. Investigation Question: Write a precise question in the form: "How does [Independent Variable] affect [Dependent Variable] in [Organism]?"

3. Kaitiakitanga Rationale: Explain why understanding this biological process matters for managing local stream health or biodiversity in Aotearoa.
