Students will know

  • That an Level 1 Science hypothesis requires a directional prediction AND a biological rationale.
  • How underlying cellular mechanisms (chlorophyll photon absorption, enzyme activation energy, water uptake) explain predicted trends.
  • Why predicting a plateau (limiting factor) demonstrates higher-level biological thinking.

Students will demonstrate

  • By writing a complete directional hypothesis with a supporting biological rationale.
  • By completing Section 2 of their Level 1 Science Biological Investigation Logbook.

NCEA Assessor Insight Prompt:

"Why does 'I predict the bubbles will increase because plants like light' get rejected for Merit/Excellence?"

Unpack: "Plants like light" is an everyday observation, not a biological explanation. A scientific rationale requires citing cellular mechanisms: "Higher light intensity delivers more photon energy to chlorophyll pigments in the thylakoids, increasing the rate of light-dependent reactions and splitting water molecules into oxygen gas."

Anatomy of a Scientific Hypothesis (15 min)

A complete hypothesis for Level 1 Science has two essential parts:

1. Directional Prediction:

"As [Independent Variable] increases from [Min Level] to [Max Level], the [Dependent Variable] will [increase/decrease] because..."

2. Biological Rationale:

"...because higher temperature increases the kinetic energy of substrate and enzyme molecules, increasing collision frequency."

📁 Biological Investigation Logbook — Section 2: Hypothesis & Rationale

Students open their Level 1 Science Logbook and complete Section 2:

Section 2 Requirements:

1. Directional Hypothesis: Write your prediction stating how changing your IV will affect your DV.

2. Biological Rationale: Write a 2-3 sentence paragraph explaining the cellular or biochemical reason for this prediction.

3. Predicted Curve/Plateau: Sketch or describe whether you expect a linear increase or a plateau/drop at extreme conditions (e.g. enzyme denaturation or limiting factors).
