Lesson at a Glance | He Tirohanga Whakamua
Ngā Whāinga Ako | Learning Intentions
Students will know
- How pilot testing identifies unforeseen practical flaws (e.g. lamp heat altering water temp, insufficient CO₂ in water).
- How to construct a professional raw data collection table with units in column headers.
- That Level 1 Science requires recording un-rounded raw measurements across all trial repeats before processing averages.
Students will demonstrate
- By carrying out practical data collection for 5 IV levels × 3 repeats (minimum 15 data points).
- By completing Section 5 of their Level 1 Science Biological Investigation Logbook.
Curriculum alignment
- NZC (2007) · Science · Level 6 · Nature of Science: “Develop and carry out more complex investigations, including using models.”
Do Now | Tīmatanga Whakaaro (10 min)
Pilot Trial Prompt:
"You set up your photosynthesis apparatus and no bubbles come out of the stem. Name 3 things you check before giving up."
Unpack: 1) Did you cut the stem underwater at an angle? 2) Is there sodium bicarbonate in the water to provide CO₂? 3) Is the lamp turned on and close enough? Pilot testing uncovers these issues before real data collection begins.
Raw Data Collection Table Standard (15 min)
NCEA Level 1 raw data tables must put units in headers and record all trial repeats separately:
| IV Level (e.g. Distance / cm) | Trial 1 (bubbles / 2 min) | Trial 2 (bubbles / 2 min) | Trial 3 (bubbles / 2 min) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 cm | 14 | 15 | 13 |
| 20 cm | 10 | 11 | 9 |
| 30 cm | 6 | 7 | 6 |
| 40 cm | 3 | 4 | 3 |
| 50 cm | 1 | 2 | 1 |
📁 Biological Investigation Logbook — Section 5: Raw Data Collection
Students open their Level 1 Science Logbook and complete Section 5:
Section 5 Requirements:
1. Pilot Trial Notes: Document 1 adjustment made during pilot testing (e.g. adding a glass heat shield to prevent lamp heating water).
2. Complete Raw Data Table: Full data table with 5 IV levels × 3 repeat trials (15 data cells populated).
3. Qualitative Observations: Note any visual changes (e.g. bubble size variation, water cloudiness, leaf position).
Exit Verification | Ka Mutu Hoki (5 min)
Exit Check:
"My raw data collection table in Section 5 contains 15 completed measurement trials ready for processing in Lesson 6."
Teacher Planning & NCEA Alignment
NCEA Level 1 Science Alignment (4 Credits):
- Data Collection: Collect and record raw data accurately in a systematic table that reflects the practical investigation setup.
- Practical Execution: Demonstrate laboratory skills and troubleshooting during experimental execution.
Vocabulary: Pilot trial, raw data, qualitative observations, measurement precision, heat shield, acclimatization.
