Lesson at a Glance | He Tirohanga Whakamua
Ngā Whāinga Ako | Learning Intentions
Students will know
- That Level 1 Science Excellence requires explaining why the biological outcome occurred using scientific ideas.
- How light intensity, photon absorption, enzyme kinetics, or water availability drive cellular rates of photosynthesis and respiration.
- How to link lab findings to real-world kaitiakitanga (e.g. why clearing stream-bank shade trees causes aquatic weed overgrowth in local awa).
Students will demonstrate
- By writing an in-depth 2-paragraph biological discussion explaining their experimental trend.
- By completing Section 8 of their Level 1 Science Biological Investigation Logbook.
Curriculum alignment
- NZC (2007) · Science · Level 6 · Living World: “Relate key structural features and functions to the life processes of plants, animals, and micro- organisms and investigate environmental factors that affect these processes.”
- NZC (2007) · Science · Level 6 · Nature of Science: “Develop an understanding of socio-scientific issues by gathering relevant scientific information in order to draw evidence-based conclusions and to take action where appropriate.”

Excellence Discussion Prompt:
"You proved that closer light increases bubble count. Why is explaining the light-dependent reaction essential for an Excellence grade?"
Unpack: Describing the graph earns Merit. Excellence requires demonstrating deep biological understanding: explaining that photons strike chlorophyll pigments in the thylakoid membranes, exciting electrons to split H₂O into H⁺ ions and O₂ gas. Higher light intensity increases photon flux until another factor (like CO₂ concentration) becomes limiting.
2 Discussion Layers for Level 1 Science (15 min)
🔬 1. Cellular / Biochemical Explanation
Explain the trend at microscopic scale: photon flux, chlorophyll activation, enzyme collision frequency, ATP synthesis, or water potential gradients.
🌿 2. Ecological / Kaitiakitanga Context
Explain what this means for local Aotearoa ecosystems: stream canopy management, agricultural runoff, native riparian planting, or water clarity in local awa.
📁 Biological Investigation Logbook — Section 8: In-Depth Biological Discussion
Students open their Level 1 Science Logbook and complete Section 8:
Section 8 Requirements:
1. Biochemical Rationale: Detailed 1-paragraph explanation of cellular mechanisms explaining why your IV changed your DV.
2. Limiting Factors / Curve Flattening: Explain why the rate plateaued or dropped at extreme conditions.
3. Ecological Kaitiakitanga Link: 1 paragraph connecting your lab findings to real stream or forest ecosystem management in Aotearoa.
Exit Verification | Ka Mutu Hoki (5 min)
Exit Check:
"My Section 8 discussion explains cellular mechanisms in detail and links findings to real-world kaitiakitanga ecosystem health."
