NCEA Excellence Boundary Prompt:
"What is the difference between a Merit evaluation ('the design meets the brief') and an Excellence evaluation?"
Unpack: Excellence requires justifying the conceptual outcome in terms of its fitness-for-purpose. This means admitting trade-offs (e.g. "We accepted a 15% increase in unit cost to eliminate 100% of toxic bio-accumulative flame retardants from the casing") and proving why that trade-off superiorly serves the long-term interest of stakeholders and whenua.
Level 1 Digital Technology Grade Boundary Checklist (20 min)
- β Brief established identifying a problem/opportunity (Section 1).
- β Physical & functional requirements defined (Section 2).
- β Multiple concept ideas generated (Section 5).
- β Modelling undertaken to test concepts (Section 6).
- β Merit: Refined concept based on stakeholder feedback (Section 7); clear specifications (Section 8).
- β Excellence: Justified design decisions using research & LCA data (Section 3 & 4); defended trade-offs in final report (Section 9).
Trade-Off Defence: Writing to the Excellence Boundary (10 min)
The checklist above states what the top grade boundary asks for. This stage is where it gets written, and it is the part students most often leave as description.
1. Find three decisions where something was given up (4 min)
Sections 5, 6 and 7 are full of them: a concept eliminated, a material rejected, a stakeholder request that could not be met alongside another one. A design with no trade-offs in it has usually not been pushed hard enough to have any.
2. Write each as a defence, not a description (4 min)
Four parts: what was chosen, what was given up, whose requirement decided it, and what would change the decision. A description says we used timber. A defence says we used timber over recycled polymer because the kaitiakitanga specification requires hand separation, and we would revisit it if the stakeholder dropped the outdoor-durability requirement.
The last part is what separates the two. A student who cannot say what would change their mind has described a preference rather than defended a decision.
3. Check the three against the boundary (2 min)
Read each defence against the checklist above and mark which boundary it reaches. Anything that does not yet reach the intended grade is rewritten now, while the reasoning is still fresh.
The strongest defences use the sentence written at the end of Lesson 7 about what the rejected concept did better β it shows the choice was made with the alternative understood, not overlooked.
π Conceptual Design Portfolio β Section 9: Evaluation & Justification Report
Students open their Level 1 Digital Technology Portfolio and complete Section 9:
Section 9 Requirements:
1. Brief Verification Matrix: Table evaluating the final conceptual design against all Lesson 2 requirements and Lesson 4 kaitiakitanga specifications.
2. Trade-Off Defence (Excellence Section): Write a 2-paragraph justification defending 2 major design trade-offs (e.g. cost vs durability, weight vs modularity, energy source vs intermittency).
3. Self-Assessed Grade Claim: Claim Achieved, Merit, or Excellence with direct citations to your portfolio sections.
