NCEA Standard Concept Prompt:
"In NCEA Level 1 Digital Technology, you are assessed on a 'Conceptual Design.' If you don't mass-produce a physical factory product, how do you get Excellence?"
Unpack: Excellence in Level 1 Digital Technology comes from depth of research, rigorous stakeholder testing, lifecycle justification, and precise conceptual modelling (orthographic drawings, render mockups, circuit schematics). A brilliant conceptual design that solves a real sustainability problem beats a rushed physical build with no research.

Students select ONE authentic context for their Level 1 Digital Technology portfolio:

Design a modular diagnostic station or e-waste collection unit for school or town marae, facilitating local repair culture.
☀️ 2. Urban Micro-Power Harvester
Design a compact solar/kinetic energy system to power public lighting, device charging, or environmental sensors in urban spaces.
🌱 3. Automated Native Nursery Monitor
Design a smart irrigation and soil monitoring system for a school or community rōpū growing native taonga species.
🚲 4. Active School Transport Hub
Design a secure, solar-lit scooter/e-bike charging shelter that encourages active carbon-free school transport.
📁 Conceptual Design Portfolio — Section 1: The Design Opportunity
Students open their Level 1 Digital Technology Portfolio (Google Doc or slides template) and complete Section 1:
Section 1 Requirements:
1. Chosen Design Context: [Selected Challenge 1–4]
2. Problem Description: Describe the environmental, social, or economic issue in Aotearoa that your outcome addresses.
3. Target Physical Location: Identify the physical site (e.g. school grounds, local park, community centre) where the outcome would operate.
4. Initial Vision Statement: Write a 2-sentence summary of what a successful conceptual design will accomplish.
