Do Now | TΔ«matanga Whakaaro: Pre-Presentation Portfolio Check (10 min)
Ten minutes before presenting is the last moment a missing section can still be fixed. Students run their own portfolio against this check before anyone stands up.
1. Nine sections, present and named (4 min)
Open Sections 1 to 9 in order and confirm each exists, is titled, and is not a placeholder heading with nothing under it. Missing sections are listed now, not discovered by an assessor later.
2. The two specifications are traceable (3 min)
The binding kaitiakitanga specifications written in Section 4 should be visible doing work in Sections 5, 7 and 9. A specification that appears once and never constrains a decision is the exact pattern this unit set out to avoid.
3. Every claim has a source or a measurement (3 min)
Embodied-carbon figures carry their source, step counts carry the test they came from, stakeholder statements carry who said them. Anything that carries none of these is either sourced now or removed.
Showcase Pitches: The 5-Part Presentation Structure (35 min)
Five minutes per student across the class, using the structure below. The heading carries the block total so the run sheet adds up; the five parts below are the shape of each individual pitch.
1. Opportunity & Context (1 min)
State the problem opportunity (Lesson 1) and key stakeholder needs (Lesson 2).
2. Prior Art & Kaitiakitanga (1 min)
Show research into existing products (Lesson 3) and your non-negotiable kaitiakitanga specifications (Lesson 4).
3. Conceptual Modelling (1 min)
Walk through your conceptual models/renders (Lesson 6) and explain what functional testing revealed.
4. Stakeholder Refinement (1 min)
Demonstrate how stakeholder feedback (Lesson 7) shaped your final refined specifications (Lesson 8).
5. Trade-Off Defence (1 min)
Defend your major design trade-offs (Lesson 9) and summarise why your outcome is fit for purpose.
Peer Review: Feedback on the Trade-Off Defence (15 min)
Listening is assessed work in this lesson. Each student records structured feedback on their peers' trade-off defences β the part of the pitch that separates a described design from a defended one.
1. Record the four parts (7 min)
For each presenter, note what they chose, what they gave up, whose requirement decided it, and what would change their decision. Any part the presenter did not supply is left blank rather than guessed β the blanks are the useful signal.
2. Ask one question about a blank (5 min)
Questions go to the gap, not to the design in general. "What would have made you keep the second concept?" is worth more to a presenter than "nice model", and it is the question an assessor is already asking silently.
3. Hand the record to the presenter (3 min)
The written record goes to the presenter before the reflection. A defence that three peers could not follow is a defence that needs rewriting, and this is the last point in the unit where that is still possible.
