"Why do NCEA moderators reject portfolios where Concept 2 is just Concept 1 in a different colour?"

Unpack: True conceptual design requires exploring truly different technical approaches (e.g. Concept 1: modular physical device vs Concept 2: automated IoT sensor vs Concept 3: passive zero-energy gravity system). Cosmetic variations of the same idea do not satisfy the standard's requirement for divergent idea generation.

Feasibility Audit: Screening Against Your Own Specifications (10 min)

Four concepts go into this stage and two come out, and the screen is not taste. Students wrote the criteria themselves: the measurable requirements in Portfolio Section 2 and the two binding specifications in Portfolio Section 4. Both sit in front of them for this activity, open at those pages.

1. Rule the grid (2 min)

Four columns, one per conceptual direction. Rows: every measurable requirement from Section 2, then the two Kaitiakitanga Specifications from Section 4 ruled off separately at the bottom. They are handled differently and the layout should say so before anyone starts scoring.

2. Score the Section 2 requirements (5 min)

Each cell gets Meets, Partly or Does not meet, plus one sentence of evidence pointing at something visible in the sketch. A grade with no sentence beside it is a guess, and it gets sent back. Where the evidence turns out to be missing rather than weak, that is a finding worth writing down: it names what the concept has not resolved yet.

3. Apply the binding specifications (3 min)

The Section 4 specifications are not scored. A concept either satisfies them or it is out of the suite. This is the difference Lesson 4 set up between a value used as decoration and a value used as an engineering constraint, and this is the moment it becomes real: a concept that scores well on every stakeholder requirement and fails a kaitiakitanga specification is eliminated, and the elimination is recorded with its reason.

Students carry the surviving two concepts into Section 5. Where all four survive, rank them on the Section 2 evidence and say what would have to change for the bottom two to compete. Where fewer than two survive, the gap is in the brief and not in the sketching, so return to Section 2 and check which requirement is doing the eliminating and whether it is stated as tightly as the stakeholder actually meant it.

Students open their Level 1 Digital Technology Portfolio and complete Section 5:

Section 5 Requirements:

1. 4 Annotated Concept Sketches: Clear drawings or wireframes illustrating 4 distinct conceptual directions.

2. Functional Annotations: Label key components, materials, power sources, and user interaction points on each sketch.

3. Brief Alignment Check: Initial rating (1–5 stars) of how well each concept meets the Lesson 2 stakeholder needs and Lesson 4 kaitiakitanga specifications.
