Conceptual Modelling Prompt:

"You sketched a solar battery housing that looks sleek. When you build a 3D CAD model, you realise the battery doesn't fit inside the frame. Why is this a victory, not a failure?"

Unpack: Discovering a physical or technical error in the conceptual modelling phase costs zero dollars and zero waste. That is the exact purpose of modelling in Level 1 Digital Technology: finding and fixing flaws on screen or card before committing materials.

4 Modelling Methods for Level 1 Digital Technology (20 min)

๐Ÿ’ป 1. 3D CAD Renders & Assemblies

Tinkercad, Onshape, or Fusion 360. Shows exact component dimensions, exploded assembly views, and screw placement.

๐Ÿ“ 2. 2D Orthographic Projections

Scaled Front, Side, and Top elevation drawings with precise millimeter dimensions and material thickness callouts.

Full-size or scaled 3D physical mockups testing hand ergonomics, enclosure fit, button placement, and disassembly feel.

Figma or paper wireframe flows testing how a user configures, monitors, or troubleshoots the sustainable device interface.

Feasibility Testing: Does the Model Actually Work? (10 min)

A conceptual model exists to be tested, not admired. Three tests, and all three are run against the measurable requirements already written in Portfolio Section 2.

1. Spatial layout (4 min)

Does every component fit where the model says it does, at the dimensions Section 2 requires? Check the tightest constraint first, because that is the one that fails. Where the model is digital, use the measurement tool rather than the eye.

2. Disassembly mechanics (4 min)

Take it apart. Count the steps and count the tools. Both numbers get written down: they are what Lesson 8's disassembly schematic has to match or beat, and a repairability claim with no step count behind it is an opinion.

3. Record what failed (2 min)

Every test gets a written result, including the ones that went badly. A testing record with no failures in it is usually a record of testing that did not happen, and an assessor reads it that way too.

Failures found here are not setbacks to hide before Lesson 7 โ€” they are the specific things worth asking stakeholders about.

Students open their Level 1 Digital Technology Portfolio and complete Section 6:

Section 6 Requirements:

1. Conceptual Model Screenshots/Photos: Insert at least 2 clear renders, drawings, or photos of your conceptual models.

2. Technical Callouts: Label internal dimensions, material specifications, energy flow, and disassembly points.

3. Feasibility Evaluation: Describe what you discovered during modelling (e.g. "Modelling showed the solar panel needed to tilt at 35ยฐ for NZ winter sun, requiring a hinged bracket").
