    3) Organic Exporters & Anti-GE Groups: Oppose open release due to trade contamination fears.
  • How to evaluate the credibility and bias of evidence used by each stakeholder group.

Stakeholder Conflict Prompt:

"A conservation biologist says: 'Gene drives are essential to save kiwi.' An organic honey exporter says: 'Gene drives threaten our GE-free clean green image.' Are both stakeholders using valid arguments?"

Unpack: Yes! The biologist bases their stance on ecological biodiversity evidence, while the exporter bases their stance on economic market risk. NCEA Level 3 requires showing how different stakeholders prioritise different values and evidence.

Stakeholder Position & Evidence Spectrum (15 min)

1. Conservation & Agricultural Advocates

Focus on empirical data showing bird decline and Bovine TB costs. View gene editing as a precise bio-sanitation tool.

2. Cultural & Precautionary Advocates

Focus on tikanga, whakapapa, and precautionary risks. Demand proof of zero off-target gene flow before field trials.

📁 Socio-Scientific Report Portfolio — Section 7: Stakeholder Matrix

Students open their Level 3 Biology Portfolio and complete Section 7:

Section 7 Requirements:

1. 4-Stakeholder Position Matrix: Detail Stance, Core Values, Primary Evidence, and Underlying Bias for Scientists, Iwi, Farmers, and Organic Exporters.

2. Evidence Credibility Audit: Write a 2-paragraph critique evaluating peer-reviewed scientific papers vs commercial advocacy press releases.

3. Excellence Synthesis of Common Ground: 1-paragraph explanation identifying shared goals (e.g. all stakeholders want native birds protected, but disagree on methods).
