Ngā Whāinga Ako | Learning Intentions

Students will know

  • How to structure an Excellence Justification: directly linking biological knowledge (Cas9 cleavage, HDR efficiency, population collapse curves) to the chosen response.
  • How to evaluate and refute alternative options (e.g. why 1080 poison drops and trapping alone cannot achieve Pest Free 2050).
  • How to defend the proposed response against opposing stakeholder arguments using evidence-based counter-arguments.

Students will demonstrate

  • By writing a 3-part justified argument defending their proposed gene drive action plan against opposing viewpoints.
  • By completing Section 9 of their Level 3 Biology Socio-Scientific Report Portfolio.

Do Now | Tīmatanga Whakaaro (10 min)

Excellence Justification Prompt:

"Merit states: 'I support gene drives because possums kill native birds.' Excellence states: 'I support a phased daisy-chain gene drive because standard trapping achieves <70% population suppression, whereas Super-Mendelian HDR transmission guarantees >95% population collapse while daisy-chain loci decay prevents off-target international escape.' What makes the second statement Excellence?"

Unpack: The Excellence statement links specific molecular biological mechanisms (HDR transmission, loci decay) directly to ecological outcomes and risk mitigation!

Structure of an Excellence Defence (15 min)

1. Biological Fact Linking

Explicitly connect scientific data (Cas9 specificity, reproductive rates) to policy feasibility.

2. Refuting Alternative Stances

Show why alternative proposals (e.g. total GM ban or status quo 1080 poison) fail to solve the core crisis.

📁 Socio-Scientific Report Portfolio — Section 9: Justified Response & Evidence Synthesis

Students open their Level 3 Biology Portfolio and complete Section 9:

Section 9 Requirements:

1. Biological Evidence Justification: Write 2 paragraphs linking molecular biology facts (CRISPR mechanism, inheritance rates) directly to your proposed 3-phase action plan.

2. Alternative Options Critique: Write 2 paragraphs explaining why continuing status-quo chemical trapping/poisoning is biologically and economically inferior.

3. Excellence Defence against Opponents: Write a 2-paragraph defence addressing anti-GE and trade objections, proving how daisy-chain fail-safes resolve their concerns.

Exit Verification | Ka Mutu Hoki (5 min)

Exit Check:

"My Section 9 links molecular CRISPR mechanics to why alternative pest control methods fail, defending my phased plan at an Excellence level."

Teacher Planning & NCEA Alignment

NCEA Level 3 Biology Alignment (3 Credits Internal):

  • Justified Response: Justify the personal or societal response with in-depth biological knowledge.
  • Excellence Criterion: Evaluate alternative responses and defend the chosen action against opposing arguments.

Vocabulary: Justified response, evidence synthesis, counter-argument, rebuttal, alternative options, Excellence criteria.
