Excellence Justification Prompt:
"Merit states: 'I support gene drives because possums kill native birds.' Excellence states: 'I support a phased daisy-chain gene drive because standard trapping achieves a [find the real suppression rate] population suppression, whereas Super-Mendelian HDR transmission is projected to achieve a [find the real projected figure] population collapse, while daisy-chain loci decay prevents off-target international escape.' What makes the second statement Excellence — and why can't you finish writing it without a source?"
Unpack: The Excellence statement links specific molecular biological mechanisms (HDR transmission, loci decay) directly to ecological outcomes and risk mitigation — but a percentage with no source is not evidence, it's a placeholder. Before students write their own Section 9, they must replace the bracketed figures with a real, cited suppression/collapse rate (e.g. DOC or Predator Free 2050 research). An Excellence justification that states a statistic without a source is not Excellence-level evidence, whatever else it gets right.
Structure of an Excellence Defence (30 min)
Explicitly connect scientific data (Cas9 specificity, reproductive rates) to policy feasibility.
Show why alternative proposals (e.g. total GM ban or status quo 1080 poison) fail to solve the core crisis.
📁 Socio-Scientific Report Portfolio — Section 9: Justified Response & Evidence Synthesis
Students open their Level 3 Biology Portfolio and complete Section 9:
Section 9 Requirements:
1. Biological Evidence Justification: Write 2 paragraphs linking molecular biology facts (CRISPR mechanism, inheritance rates) directly to your proposed 3-phase action plan.
2. Alternative Options Evaluation: Write 2 paragraphs weighing the status quo — chemical trapping and poisoning — against your proposed response, on biological effectiveness and on cost. State which you judge stronger and on what evidence. If the status quo wins on a criterion, say so.
3. Defence against Objections: Write a 2-paragraph response to the strongest objections you can state against your own response — anti-GE, trade, tikanga, or ecological. Where a containment measure answers an objection, show how. Where nothing you have answers it, say so plainly: a justification that cannot name what would defeat it is not Excellence-level.
