⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now: Socio-Scientific Concept Recall (10 mins)

One study, two headlines. Your kaiako will show you two news reports of the same piece of research reaching opposite-sounding conclusions.

Two minutes: neither headline is technically false. Say what each one did to the finding — what was omitted, what was amplified, what a percentage was taken of. Then decide what you would need to see to judge the study itself rather than the reporting.

📖 Activity 1: Biological Evidence & Ethical Analysis (25 mins)

Audit two sources (15 min). For each of the two conflicting sources provided, record: peer-reviewed or not, sample size, controls, who funded it, and whether the conclusion exceeds the data. Then decide which is more reliable and name the single factor that decided it.

Trace it back (10 min). Take one media claim and follow it to the primary study. Report what the study actually measured versus what the claim asserts. If you cannot find a primary source, that is itself a finding — record it.

📝 Activity 2: Level 3 Biology (Internal) Report Drafting & Merit/Excellence Scaffolding (20 mins)

Report — Section 4. Submit: (1) your two-source audit table with a reasoned verdict; (2) the trace from media claim to primary study with the discrepancy stated; (3) a checklist in your own words for judging a biological claim you meet outside class.
