Whānau Newsletters
Each newsletter is three A4 pages printed double-sided: two content pages and a dedicated mahi kāinga page. The wordfind on page 3 — its own side when folded for photocopying — is a deliberate structural choice, and it deserves an honest explanation. A wordfind is not the kind of homework I would usually set. It is light work, not deep learning. My usual preference is structured project-based home learning: growing a plant, an interview, a real-world investigation. But this term-opener is not homework for the ākonga's learning. It is homework for the whānau.
The designed-in scenario is this: the newsletter arrives home, the ākonga flips to page 3 and starts the wordfind. While they do, the whānau read pages 1 and 2. They are reading about the kaiako, the nine-week journey, what their ākonga will make, and where the technology could lead. They are informed — and they look engaged. The wordfind fulfils both needs simultaneously, right at the start of each term, when first impressions matter most. It speaks directly to Standard 3 of Our Code, Our Standards — the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand's foundational document for every registered kaiako.

There is no age at which a young person is too old to be read to. Reading aloud together — sharing a news article, a book, a story — builds vocabulary, critical thinking, and whānau connection in ways no worksheet can. I wanted that message to sit in every newsletter, unmissable, gold-bordered, spanning the full width.
Two e-asTTle writing assessments are woven across the three newsletters. In Digital Design & Media (Newsletter 2), the Week 1–3 usability write-up — a formal critique of an NZ website's design and accessibility — is assessed as a writing task. In Physical Computing & Robotics (Newsletter 3), ākonga write an explanation of how their robot's electronics work, connecting engineering practice to literacy. e-asTTle writing is a tool for assessing writing quality, not subject content; threading it into Technology is a deliberate cross-curricular move.
