Critical Analysis Prompt:
"If a company puts a koru pattern on a disposable plastic bottle, is that Te Ao Māori technology design? Why or why not?"
Unpack: Putting a Māori design pattern on a single-use plastic item that pollutes the moana is decorative co-optation — it uses cultural symbols to mask environmental harm. Genuine Te Ao Māori technology design is defined by how the system functions (kaitiakitanga, whakawhanaungatanga, long-term stewardship), not how it looks on the surface.
3 Traditional Systems as Design Inputs (15 min)
🌙 1. Maramataka (Timing & Yield)
The lunar-environmental calendar aligns harvesting and planting with natural energy cycles. Design Constraint: Operate or manufacture only when natural energy systems permit; avoid artificial continuous overload.
🌊 2. Rāhui (Adaptive Restriction)
Temporary restriction placed on a area or resource to allow ecological recovery. Design Constraint: Build automated cooling/rest periods into technology systems to prevent resource depletion.
🏡 3. Papakāinga (Communal Design)
Traditional village design where infrastructure is shared, modular, and built for multi-generational utility. Design Constraint: Shared ownership models rather than individual single-user devices.
Activity: Formulating the Constraint (15 min)
A design constraint is a rule that limits your design choices to ensure a non-negotiable outcome. Students practice converting mātauranga principles into measurable technological rules:
"My phone design will respect kaitiakitanga and look like a greenstone pendant."
"My phone design must contain ZERO toxic rare-earths mined without land restoration guarantees, and must be 100% disassemble-able by hand so no hazardous waste reaches landfill."

Students open their Design Journal and write Section 6 (this directly feeds into Lesson 7's formal Design Brief):
Section 6 Requirements:
1. Selected Traditional Framework: [Maramataka / Rāhui / Papakāinga / Whakawhanaungatanga]
2. Cultural Function: Explain how this framework traditionally protected ecological or social balance.
3. Formal Design Constraint: Write your exact design rule in the format: "My product redesign MUST [X] because kaitiakitanga requires [Y]."
