Tirohanga whānui | What this module is doing
This module fails when the neatest or most personal portfolio is rewarded. The evidence is control over craft and revision—not disclosure, performance confidence, identity, or decorative presentation.
You’ll need
- Print or open the portfolio evidence rubric and Workshop 10.
- Ask learners to bring drafts from at least three modules; provide school storage access where possible.
- Offer written, audio, or conference reflection and private submission.

Do Now — What proves learning? 6 min
Run it
- Sort sample portfolio items into product, process evidence, and decoration.
- Identify which item shows a decision changing and why that matters.
Model — Curate, do not collect everything 10 min
Run it
- Model choosing three contrasting pieces for purpose or craft.
- Pair one finished passage with its earlier version and narrate the change.
- Draft a reflection sentence naming a decision, its effect, and an honest limit.
Guided practice — Evidence conference 14 min
Run it
- Pairs use the rubric to locate purpose, craft, development, and revision evidence.
- Each learner receives one question and one possible next step, not a score.
- Writers choose which feedback to act on and note why.
Independent build — Portfolio submission 20 min
Run it
- Select three pieces or extracts and label their audience and purpose.
- Include one before-and-after trail with the change highlighted.
- Write a 120-word statement naming two craft decisions, evidence of change, and one next step.
Revision — Missing-evidence check 7 min
Run it
- Audit the portfolio against the four criteria.
- Add a label, earlier draft, or explanation where the evidence is not yet visible.
Exit — Handoff to the reader 3 min

- Submit a one-sentence guide: “Look first at ___ because it shows ___.”

Tautoko / Support
- Allow excerpts instead of full pieces and provide the reflection frame on Workshop 10.
- Offer private teacher conference, audio reflection, or typed submission; public reading is optional.

Curate two pieces showing the same craft move used differently for different audiences, and analyse the transfer.
Evidence choices
Portfolio excerpts and reflection may combine typed, handwritten, dictated, or recorded evidence. Judge the visible craft decisions and revision trail, not format consistency or presentation confidence.
Source and cultural-authority boundary
“Ko au te kaituhi” names the learner as writer; it does not require whakapapa, private identity, or a public declaration. Assess the writing evidence only. Attribute any borrowed kupu or source and respect a learner’s choice not to share aloud.

Use language features that support analysis of how meaning is shaped, including those identified in the teaching sequence.

Learners analyse features across their own texts, compare how those choices shaped meaning, and curate evidence of deliberate adaptation.
Honest limit: writing production is not represented by an active Phase 3 English statement. The capstone uses the verified analysis statement to examine meaning-making across the portfolio and claims no Phase 4 production alignment.

- Portfolio selections come from the learner's module work; all supplied mentor models across that work are original Te Kete Ako practice texts.
- Excerpts, private conferencing, and fictional subject matter are all valid: no external video, copyrighted passage, public performance, or personal identity disclosure is required.
