Years 7–8Tikanga-ā-Iwi / Social Sciences
🎯 Learning Intentions
- I can explain what manu need to survive (food, shelter, water, safety).
- I can identify threats to manu habitats in our area.
- I can interview a whānau member or kaitiaki about manu.
✅ Success Criteria
- I completed a cause → effect → action chain for one threat.
- I interviewed someone and recorded a quote I can use.
- I can explain one way humans impact manu habitats.
🧭 Lesson Flow
- Hook (5): Photos of habitat threats — students sort into "helps manu" / "harms
manu".
- Mini-lesson (10): What do manu need? (food, shelter, water, safety). Introduce
predators (cats, rats, stoats), habitat loss, pollution.
- Cause/Effect (15): In pairs, complete Cause → Effect → Action organiser for 2-3 threats.
- Interview Prep (10): Review interview prompts. Practice with a partner.
- Interview Time (15): Invite a whānau helper or kaitiaki to class, OR assign as
homework. Students record a quote.
- Share (10): Share one cause/effect and one quote with table group.
🎬 Media Anchor
Use this clip to connect habitat pressures with kaitiaki decision-making before cause-and-effect analysis.
Video anchor: Kaitiakitanga and ecosystem health
- Pause and discuss: Which pressure shown in the clip is most relevant to our local habitat?
- Link to today's task: Students add one evidence note from the clip into their lesson artefact.
🧰 Differentiation
- Support: Pre-filled cause cards to match with effects; interview with teacher support.
- Extension: Research a specific predator; find local control programs.
✅ Checks for Understanding
- Cause/effect sheets show logical connections.
- Students have recorded at least one usable quote.
- Students can explain 2+ threats to local manu.
