Lesson 2: Counting Birds

Full runsheet · 60–70 min. Students learn the five-minute bird count, practise it indoors, then run a real one at the spot they predicted in Lesson 1.

Lesson 1 ended with each pair predicting where they would see the most manu. Today they test that prediction with a real method — and find out whether their guess was right.

Tirohanga Whānui | What this lesson is doing

The five-minute bird count is a real survey method, not a classroom exercise. It works because it is bounded: one place, one observer, five minutes, count what you can see or hear. That bounding is what makes two counts comparable.

The intellectual work is honesty under pressure. Students will hear something they cannot identify, and the temptation is to write down the bird they hoped for. Lesson 1 taught them to record confidence; today they have to actually do it while a timer runs. A count with honest gaps is data. A count filled in from hope is not.

You'll need

  • Manu ID & Tally Sheet — the same one from Lesson 1, with their ID key already in the front
  • Their Habitat Map from Lesson 1, showing the spot each pair chose
  • Bird call audio for the indoor practice — DOC and NZ Birds Online publish per-species recordings
  • A visible timer, clipboards, and your wet-weather plan (see Act 3)

Do Now — Name that tell 6 min

What it is: Fast retrieval of Lesson 1's ID key, so it is available under time pressure later.

Run it

  1. Rapid fire (4 min): say a tell, students call the manu. "White tufts at the throat." "Fans its tail." "Red shield above the beak." "Big, white breast, sharp line." Go twice, faster the second time.
  2. The reverse (2 min): name a bird, students give the tell. This is the harder direction and the one they need today.

Watch for: students who can name birds but not tells. They will struggle in the count, because a tell is what you check in the two seconds before the bird moves.

Act 1 — What a five-minute count is 10 min

What it is: The method, taught as a set of rules with a reason attached to each.

Run it

Write the four rules on the board and give the reason for each — students copy them into the tally sheet.

Ask (2 min): "Which rule would be easiest to break without anyone noticing?" The answer is the last one — which is exactly why it is the one that matters.

Act 2 — Tikanga before we go 6 min

What it is: Students set the rules for how to behave in the manu's space, rather than being given them.

Run it

  1. Pose it (1 min): "We are about to go and stand in a place where manu live. We are the visitors. What does manaakitanga look like when the host is a bird?"
  2. Pairs write two rules (3 min).
  3. Build the class list (2 min): take them and write the agreed list on the board. Expect quiet voices, stay on the paths, no sudden movements, do not go near anything that looks like a nest. Add the last one if nobody does.

Why students set these: a rule you wrote is one you follow when the teacher is thirty metres away, which is where you will be during the count.

Act 3 — Practise indoors 12 min

What it is: A full dress rehearsal with audio, so the first real count is not also the first attempt at the method.

Run it

  1. Set up (2 min): tally sheets out, timer visible, silence.
  2. Run a five-minute audio count (5 min): play overlapping bird calls for exactly five minutes. Students tally by species and mark anything they could not identify in the unknown row. No talking, no comparing.
  3. Compare in threes (3 min): totals will differ. That is the point.
  4. Discuss (2 min): "Whose count is right?" Steer to: none of them exactly, and the differences tell you how much to trust a single count. Real surveys use many counts for this reason.

If you cannot get outside afterwards

Run the audio count twice more from different "positions" — vary which calls dominate — and treat the three counts as three survey points. Students compare across them and write what they can and cannot conclude. The reasoning is the same; only the fresh air is missing.

Act 4 — The real count 20 min

What it is: Each pair runs a genuine five-minute count at the spot they predicted in Lesson 1.

Run it

  1. Walk out and place pairs (6 min): each pair goes to their own chosen spot. Spread them out — pairs within earshot will influence each other.
  2. Settle, then count (2 + 5 min): two minutes standing still and silent first. Birds disturbed by your arrival come back in about that time. Then five minutes on the timer.
  3. Record immediately (3 min): before walking back, each pair writes their total, their unknown count, and one sentence about conditions — wind, rain, time of day, the mower running.
  4. Walk back (4 min).

Kaiako note: the two-minute settle is the step everyone skips and it changes the result more than anything else students control.

Synthesise — Was your prediction right? 10 min

Run it

  1. Class data table (4 min): put every pair's spot, total and unknown count on the board. Keep it — Lesson 3 uses it.
  2. Each pair answers in writing (4 min): Did our spot give the count we expected? Which habitat category from our map best explains what we found?
  3. Two pairs report (2 min): deliberately pick one whose prediction held and one whose did not. The failed prediction is more interesting and should be treated that way.

Hands forward to Lesson 3: the spots with low counts are the ones Lesson 3 investigates — what is missing there, or what is dangerous.

Exit ticket 4 min

On a slip:

  1. Our count was ____ manu, with ____ unknown.
  2. One thing that would have made our count more accurate.
  3. Would you trust a single five-minute count to tell you how many manu live somewhere? One sentence, yes or no, and why.

Reading these: question 3 is the one to read closely. A student who says "yes" has not absorbed the comparison in Act 3. A student who says "no, because ours was different from the pair next to us" has understood measurement error without needing the term.

Tautoko / Support

  • Pre-fill the tally sheet species rows so the student is counting, not writing.
  • Pair with a confident identifier and assign the tally-marking role.
  • Allow a three-minute count if five is too long to sustain attention.

Toitoi / Extension

  • Run a second count at a deliberately different spot and compare — that is the beginning of a real survey design.
  • Work out what the class data can and cannot support. "More manu near the trees" — can we actually claim that from one count each?

Te reo Māori

  • Kupu for today: tatau (to count), āta titiro (observe closely), whakarongo (listen).
  • Keep the Māori bird names in the tally sheet — the count is a te reo reading task too.

Mātauranga Māori | Observation as a discipline

Counting birds by standing still and listening is not only a scientific method. Detailed, seasonal, place-based observation is how the māramataka works — recorded across generations, in one place, by people who returned to it.

Worth naming to students: the five-minute count is a very short version of something Māori observers have done over much longer timescales. Ask them what a single five-minute count cannot see that fifty years of watching one awa would.

Ecosystems are composed of biotic and abiotic factors, which interact with each other and are important to the survival of organisms.

The count makes the interaction concrete: students chose their spot from a habitat map of abiotic and physical features, then measured the biotic result. Where the two disagreed — a promising-looking spot with a low count — that gap is the lesson, and Lesson 3 goes after it.

Sources and checking

  • Five-minute bird count method: the standard NZ point-count survey used by DOC and community monitoring groups. Check DOC's current guidance if you want to align exactly with a local monitoring programme.
  • Bird calls: NZ Birds Online (Te Papa) and DOC species pages publish per-species recordings. Use those rather than a generic compilation, which often mixes in overseas species.
  • No population figures appear in this lesson on purpose. Counts move, and a stale number taught as current is worse than none.
