Lesson 10: Biological Investigation Capstone Report Synthesis

Carrying out a practical biological investigation with direction into a biological context.

🎯 Ngā Whāinga Akoranga | Learning Intentions

🧠 Students will know:

Integrated understanding of the scientific investigation process: hypothesis, variable control, method design, reliable data collection, graphing, biological explanation, and critical evaluation.

✏️ Students will demonstrate:

Assemble complete Level 1 Biology Investigation Portfolio, conduct final self-audit against NZQA rubrics, and present research findings.

Biological Investigation Systemic Review

Video Clip: How Do Scientists Investigate? — the complete scientific investigation cycle from question to conclusion (Miacademy) (Runtime: 5m 52s).

🧠 1. Before Viewing (Activate & Predict)

How does mastering practical biological investigation prepare you for senior NCEA sciences and real-world scientific inquiry?

👁️ 2. During Viewing (Watch With a Job)

  • Complete cycle: as you watch, identify each stage of the investigation process. Match each stage to the lessons in this unit (L1 aims → L2 variables → L3 method → … → L9 evaluation).
  • Connection: which stage does the video spend most time on? Does that match where your own investigation needed the most work? Explain.
  • Self-assess: rate your confidence (1–5) for each section of your Level 1 Biology investigation report. Which section still needs the most improvement before submission?

🗣️ 3. After Viewing & Kaiako Move (Process & Apply)

Kaiako Move: Facilitate final report assembly and celebrate student mastery of Level 1 Biological Investigation.

Immediate Task: Final Level 1 Biology Investigation Portfolio Submission & Certificate.

⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now: Investigation Recall (10 mins)

Read it as the marker. Five minutes with your full report and nothing else: mark the single sentence that states your trend, the single sentence that gives the biological mechanism, and the single sentence that names your most significant limitation.

If you cannot find all three, that is the section to repair first — not the section you enjoyed writing most.

📖 Activity 1: Investigation Planning & Practical Execution (25 mins)

Repair, don't reread (20 min). Fix the sections where you could not find those sentences. Add the missing link, the missing number, or the missing direction. Underline what you added so you can see the shape of your own gaps.

Full check (15 min). Against the criteria: aim and hypothesis with reason, controlled variables with methods, repeatable method, three trials with means, SALT graph, conclusion quoting data, mechanistic biology, three-part evaluation. Tick each only if you can point at the sentence.

📝 Activity 2: Level 1 Biology Investigation Log & Merit/Excellence Scaffolding (20 mins)

Report — Section 10 (final). Submit: (1) your three marked sentences; (2) the repaired sections with additions underlined; (3) the completed criteria check with a sentence reference for each tick; (4) one paragraph on what you would investigate next and why.
