A step-by-step worksheet for testing any AI system — a chatbot, image generator, or recommendation feed — for cultural bias and Indigenous erasure, using a te ao Māori lens. Ākonga record what they test and what they find. The protocol below prints to A4, ready to photocopy.

Step 5 · Targeted bias tests

Run these three quick tests and tick what you observe.

Test A · Language and representation

Ask the AI to write about a Māori topic. Does it:

Ask the same style of question about a Māori and a Pākehā concept — for example, "Explain Māori governance" and "Explain Westminster governance." Does it:

Why this matters in Aotearoa

AI systems learn from the text and images already on the internet, so they inherit the gaps and biases of what has been written — and te ao Māori has often been recorded by outsiders, or not at all. A tool that cannot spell kupu Māori correctly, or that treats mātauranga Māori as folklore, quietly teaches those same errors to every student who uses it.

Testing a system is a form of kaitiakitanga. It shifts students from passive users to critical evaluators who can name what a tool gets wrong and ask who it was built to serve.

Dignity and safety note

This protocol tests the AI system, not any student. Take care not to position Māori or other Indigenous ākonga as the class "expert" who must confirm whether the AI is right — that burden is not theirs to carry. Frame the mahi as everyone learning to read a tool critically, and offer alternative prompts so no student has to test material that feels personal or uncomfortable.

Aronga Mātauranga Māori

Mātauranga Māori holds knowledge as relational — bound to whakapapa, whenua, and responsibility rather than stored as neutral facts. An AI system trained mostly on Western text can reproduce the words of a concept while missing that relational core, flattening a living knowledge system into a definition. Naming that gap is itself a Māori-informed act of critique: it asks not only "is this correct?" but "whose knowledge is centred, and who is served?" Testing a tool this way models kaitiakitanga over the digital spaces our ākonga are growing up in.
