Systems Lesson 5.1: Design Challenge Launch

In this lesson students move from analysing systems to designing one. Teams create a first blueprint for a society, justify the relationships between its parts, and test whether their design protects collective wellbeing, fairness, and the taiao.

📋 Teacher Planning Snapshot

Timing, Grouping & Materials

75 minutes: 10 min launch provocation, 12 min team charter, 25 min systems blueprint sprint, 15 min stress test, 10 min peer critique, 3 min exit ticket.

Grouping: Teams of 3-5 with clearly assigned rotating roles: facilitator, systems mapper, evidence keeper, equity checker, and presenter.

Materials: Large paper or shared canvas, sticky notes, coloured markers, and the linked society design templates.

Readiness & Prior Learning

Students should have worked with systems components, feedback loops, government forms, civic participation, Te Tiriti, colonisation, and kaitiakitanga across Lessons 1.1-4.2.

Common misconception: Students may design isolated features instead of a system. Keep asking: "What changes elsewhere when this part changes?"

Cultural Safety & Localisation

Use te ao Māori concepts already taught in the unit as thinking lenses, not as decorative labels. Where local tikanga, iwi histories, or place-based examples are used, follow existing school guidance and consult whānau, hapū, or iwi knowledge holders where appropriate.

Learning Intentions

Students Will Understand

  • A society can be analysed and designed as a system of relationships, roles, rules, resources, values, and feedback loops.
  • Good system design needs to balance individual rights, collective responsibilities, power, fairness, and care for place.
  • Te ao Māori concepts such as whakapapa, manaakitanga, kotahitanga, and kaitiakitanga can help designers ask deeper questions about relationships and consequences.

Students Will Do

  • Create a team charter for how decisions will be made and disagreements will be handled.
  • Draft a systems blueprint for a new society, showing at least four connected systems.
  • Stress-test the blueprint using scenario cards and peer critique, then identify one improvement.

Success Criteria

By the end of this lesson, students can say:

  • ✅ I can identify a feedback loop or accountability process that helps the society respond when something goes wrong.

🌿 Mātauranga Māori Lens

Design question: If a society is a living network of relationships, what responsibilities are created by those relationships?

Invite students to use whakapapa as a systems lens for relationships across people, place, past, and future; kaitiakitanga as a design test for guardianship; manaakitanga as a test for dignity and care; and kotahitanga as a test for how collective decisions are made. This is not a requirement to imitate local tikanga. It is a way to ask whether design choices uphold relationships and responsibilities.

Ngā Mahi - Lesson Activities (75 minutes)

1. Launch Provocation: What Must a Society Solve? (10 mins)

Prompt: A new community is being formed in Aotearoa. It has people, land, resources, histories, conflicts, hopes, and future generations to consider. What must this society design well if it wants to thrive?

  • Students silently write one must-have system on a sticky note: governance, resources, learning, health, justice, culture, environment, communication, or another system.
  • Pairs cluster notes into systems and draw arrows showing what affects what.
  • Class names the design challenge: "We are not making a fantasy place. We are designing a system that must work under pressure."

2. Team Charter: How Will We Make Decisions? (12 mins)

Teams create a fast working agreement before they design the society. This models the governance problem they are about to solve.

Charter Prompts

  • How will every voice be heard before a decision is made?
  • How will the team handle disagreement without rushing to majority rule?
  • Who will track evidence from earlier lessons?
  • What responsibility does each role have today?

Kaiako Move

Listen for groups defaulting to "the loudest person decides." Pause and ask: "What accountability process prevents one person from holding too much power?"

3. Systems Blueprint Sprint (25 mins)

Students draft the first version of their society blueprint. Each group must include at least four connected systems and show how information, resources, decisions, and responsibilities move between them.

Governance

Who makes decisions? How is power limited? How can people challenge unfair decisions?

Resources & Work

How are needs met? What is shared, traded, protected, or restored?

Rights & Responsibilities

What rights are protected? What responsibilities come with belonging?

Culture, Learning & Place

How are identity, language, knowledge, the taiao, and future generations cared for?

Required output: one labelled system map with arrows, one sentence explaining the society's purpose, and one feedback loop that detects harm or unfairness.

4. Stress Test: What Breaks First? (15 mins)

Give each team two stress-test scenarios. They must mark where their blueprint fails, adapts, or needs a new feedback loop.

Scenario Bank

  • A scarce resource is running out and two groups need it.
  • A popular leader starts ignoring the rules.
  • A new whānau arrives with different needs and language strengths.
  • A decision helps the economy but harms the river.
  • A conflict grows between individual choice and collective safety.

Stress-Test Questions

  • Who notices the problem first?
  • Who has authority to respond, and who are they accountable to?
  • What repair process restores balance?
  • What would be redesigned before the next lesson?

5. Peer Wānanga Critique: Two Stars and a Knot (10 mins)

Teams pair up. Each receiving team asks for feedback on one part of its system that feels uncertain.

  • Star 1: One system connection that is clear and convincing.
  • Star 2: One design choice that supports wellbeing, fairness, or kaitiakitanga.
  • Knot: One tension, missing voice, or unintended consequence the team needs to untangle.

6. Exit Ticket: Redesign Decision (3 mins)

Each student completes: "The system our group most needs to improve is ___ because ___. Evidence from earlier learning that can help us is ___."

Formative Evidence

  • Team charter shows how decision-making and disagreement will be handled.
  • Blueprint includes named systems, relationships, and at least one feedback loop.
  • Stress-test annotations show students can predict consequences and revise design.
  • Exit tickets identify a specific improvement and connect it to earlier evidence.

Next Lesson Setup

Collect or photograph each blueprint. Open Lesson 5.2 by asking teams to convert their exit-ticket improvement into a research question and evidence-gathering task.

Optional workflow continuation: Teams can save their charter and blueprint notes in My Kete, then use Te Wānanga or Creation Studio to turn their strongest system map into a presentation artefact.

Differentiation, Inclusion & Readiness Guidance

Entry, On-Level, Extension

  • Entry: Provide a four-box society template and sentence starters: "This system affects ___ because ___."
  • On-level: Require four systems, two labelled feedback loops, and one stress-test revision.
  • Extension: Ask students to compare their design with a real governance or resource-management example from Aotearoa or overseas.

Inclusion Supports

  • ESOL / ELL: Pre-teach vocabulary: governance, accountability, resource, responsibility, feedback loop, restore.
  • Neurodiversity: Use visible timers, role cards, chunked tasks, and a choice of drawing, speaking, typing, or arranging sticky notes.
  • Participation: Use a round-robin first so quieter students contribute before open discussion.
