Lesson 3: CVC Word Building - Mastering Three-Sound Words
🎯 Learning Objectives
🧭 One-Change Word Chain Clinic (7 mins)
Live/local protocol: Make phoneme manipulation observable with tiles and an auditable word chain.
- Before: Display sat. Learners identify its three grapheme–phoneme positions and predict what one permitted change can do.
- During: Build sat → mat → map → mop → top → tap. Record the old word, changed position, new grapheme–phoneme, and new word at each step.
- Kaiako move: Require exactly one changed phoneme per step and reread every result to verify it is a real word; accuracy comes before speed.
- After: Pairs design a three-step chain for another pair, then audit whether every transition changes only one sound.
- Immediate Use: Carry the chain into the word-family, mystery-word, and word-fixing stations below.
- Support / Stretch: Support with three-box frames and a restricted tile set; stretch with medial-vowel and final-phoneme changes justified aloud or in writing.
- Students systematically build and read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words
- Students understand word manipulation (changing one sound changes the word)
- Students apply sound buttons confidently to decode unfamiliar words
- Students recognise common CVC word patterns
- Students build automatic sound-symbol recognition
📦 Materials Needed
Teacher Materials:
- Full 'Code' card set (s, a, t, p, m, d, g, o)
- Large magnetic letters
- Word building mat (demo size)
- CVC word list (organised by pattern)
- Timer for fluency practice
Student Materials:
- Individual letter tiles (3 sets per student)
- Word building mats
- CVC word practice sheets
- Small whiteboards
- Sound button stickers
1. Sound Speed Drill (5 mins)
Activity: "Let's warm up our brains with some speed practice! When I show a letter, say the sound as quickly as you can."
Drill Sequence:
- Round 1: Show letters in order: s-a-t-p-m-d-g-o
- Round 2: Random order, building speed
- Round 3: Student challenge - can they beat their time?
2. Systematic CVC Word Building (15 mins)
Teacher Introduction: "Today we're going to become word builders! We'll learn how changing just one sound can make a completely different word."
Word Family Progression:
- -at family: sat → mat → pat → gat (gat is a practice pseudo-word — students read it by the rule, then confirm it is not a real word)
- -og family: dog → gog → mog → tog (dog is the anchor; gog, mog and tog are practice pseudo-words — read by the rule, then confirmed as not real words)
- -ap family: map → sap → tap → gap
- Mixed practice: All patterns combined
Teaching Process:
- Start with 'sat'
- Change 's' to 'm' → 'mat'
- Students predict the new word
- Build and read together
- Continue pattern
3. Independent Word Building Practice (15 mins)
Setup: Students work in pairs with letter tiles and word building mats.
Station Activities:
- Station 1: Word family races (-at, -og, -ap words)
- Station 2: Mystery word building (teacher calls out word, students build)
- Station 3: Word fixing (broken words to repair)
- Station 4: Speed building challenge
Partner Protocol:
- Partner A builds the word
- Partner B checks with sound buttons
- Both partners read the word aloud
- Switch roles for next word
- Help each other when stuck
4. CVC Reading Fluency (8 mins)
Objective: Practise reading CVC words quickly and accurately without sounding out every letter.
Fluency Word Lists:
- Level 1: sat, mat, pat, tap, map, gap
- Level 2: dog, got, pot, top, mop, sop
- Level 3: Mixed: sat, dog, tap, got, map, pot
- Look at the whole word
- Try to read it smoothly first
- If stuck, use sound buttons
- Go back and read smoothly
5. Word Building Challenge & Exit Ticket (2 mins)
Exit Challenge
"Build these words with your letter tiles: 'got', 'mat', 'sap'. Use sound buttons to check your work."
Assessment Rubric:
- Emerging: Builds 1-2 words correctly with help
- Developing: Builds all words correctly, may need sound button reminder
- Secure: Builds all words accurately and uses sound buttons independently
📊 Assessment & Differentiation
Observation Focus:
- Speed of sound recognition
- Accuracy in word building
- Understanding of letter-sound changes
- Use of sound button strategy
- Reading fluency improvement
Differentiation Strategies:
- Struggling: Limit to 2-3 word families
- Confident: Add 4-letter words (maps, dogs)
- Advanced: Create their own word families
- ELL Support: Picture cards for word meanings
Kaiako Planning Snapshot
English Literacy — Structured Literacy & Phonics Foundations — Years 7–8
Te Mātaiaho (2025 draft) | English — Years 7–8. This snapshot records Lesson 3's teaching focus; the unit overview carries the curriculum anchor.
Ngā Whāinga Akoranga — Learning Intentions
- Build CVC words by chaining one phoneme at a time
- Read CVC words on sight after building them
- Spell CVC words from dictation using sound boxes
Differentiation & Proximal Guidance
Entry: pre-decodable word cards with visual supports and phoneme frames. On-level: target word list with blending practice. Extension: student-generated sentences using target pattern in context.
Cultural context: tikanga-based classroom protocols (karakia, mihimihi, manaakitanga) frame each session. Incorporate te reo Māori alongside structured literacy to honour hauora and whanaungatanga.
