Lesson 16: Assessment & Celebration - Completing Our Literacy Journey
🎯 Learning Objectives
🧭 Private Progress Review (8 mins)
Live/local protocol: Assessment for this cohort is done privately and shown as growth. No public reading, no ranking, no comparison.
- Before: Return the Lesson 12 tracking slip and the marked text from Lesson 15. Each ākonga has their own starting evidence in front of them.
- During: One quiet read of the Lesson 11 passage, timed by the ākonga. They compare only against their own earlier record and write one sentence on what changed.
- Kaiako move: Conference individually and briefly. Name one specific, observed gain — a held pause, a flexed vowel, a peeled affix. General praise teaches nothing and struggling readers do not believe it.
- After: Each ākonga sets one goal in their own words for the next unit and writes it where they will see it.
- Immediate Use: Carry the goals into the next unit's first session and open by rereading them.
- Support / Stretch: Support by scribing the reflection sentence. Stretch by choosing their own passage as evidence and justifying why it demonstrates the gain.
- Students demonstrate mastery of 'The Code' phonics system learned throughout the unit
- Students apply phonics knowledge to read and spell unfamiliar words
- Students reflect on their literacy learning journey and growth
- Students feel confident and proud of their literacy achievements
- Students understand next steps in their continued literacy development

2. Comprehensive Assessment (20 mins)
Assessment Overview: A multi-part assessment that demonstrates student mastery across all phonics concepts learned.
Part 1: Sound Recognition (5 mins)
- Flash 'Code' cards from throughout unit
- Students say the sound for each pattern

- Success: 90%+ accuracy
Part 2: Word Reading (8 mins)
- Graded word lists (simple → complex)
- Include real and nonsense words
- Test: CVC, digraphs, long vowels, r-controlled, multisyllabic
- Success: Age-appropriate fluency and accuracy
Part 3: Spelling Dictation (4 mins)
- Dictate words representing key patterns

Assessment Rubric:
- Mastered (4): Confident, automatic application of all phonics patterns
- Secure (3): Accurate application with minimal support needed
- Developing (2): Generally accurate with some patterns needing practice
- Emerging (1): Basic understanding with significant support still needed
3. Literacy Achievement Celebration (12 mins)
Celebration Focus: Acknowledge every student's growth and build excitement for continued literacy learning.
Celebration Activities:
Individual Recognition (5 mins):
- Present personalised achievement certificates
- Highlight specific growth for each student
- Share favourite moments from the unit

- Display class progress chart
- Special reading privileges or book selection
Future Connections (3 mins):
- Preview exciting literacy learning ahead
- Connect to next level reading materials
- Encourage continued reading at home
- Remind students they are now "Code Masters"
4. Next Steps & Recommendations (5 mins)
Teacher Guidance: Provide clear next steps for continued literacy development based on assessment results.
For Students Who Need Continued Support:
- Review specific phonics patterns that need strengthening
- Recommend decodable text series for practice
- Suggest continued structured literacy instruction
- Provide home practice activities
- Schedule follow-up assessment timeline
For Students Ready to Advance:
- Introduce more complex phonics patterns
- Move to higher-level guided reading
- Focus on reading comprehension strategies
- Encourage independent reading choices
- Begin advanced spelling patterns
Unit Completion Documentation:
- Assessment Results: Complete rubric scores for each student
- Growth Documentation: Before/after samples and progress charts
- Next Steps Plan: Individual recommendations for each student

Kaiako Planning Snapshot
English Literacy — Structured Literacy & Phonics Foundations — Years 7–8
Te Mātaiaho (2025 draft) | English — Years 7–8. This snapshot records Lesson 16's teaching focus; the unit overview carries the curriculum anchor.
Ngā Whāinga Akoranga — Learning Intentions
- Demonstrate a term of code-breaking growth on the cumulative check
- Explain their own strategy use with examples
- Set a reading goal for next term
Paearu Angitu — Success Criteria
- I can identify and name the focus phonics pattern in at least 5 examples
- I can blend phonemes to read 3 new words correctly without support
- I can complete the exit task using the target pattern independently
Differentiation & Proximal Guidance
Entry: pre-decodable word cards with visual supports and phoneme frames. On-level: target word list with blending practice. Extension: student-generated sentences using target pattern in context.
Inclusion & Accessibility
ESOL/ELL: pair with bilingual phonics chart and allow L1 sound comparisons. Neurodiverse learners: reduce visual clutter on worksheets; allow verbal responses for exit tasks. Accessibility: large-print decodable text available on request.
Cultural context: tikanga-based classroom protocols (karakia, mihimihi, manaakitanga) frame each session. Incorporate te reo Māori alongside structured literacy to honour hauora and whanaungatanga.
