Massey University
Initial Teacher Education
"Te kunenga ki Pūrehuroa" — the place where knowledge comes to life
Programme Overview
Massey University — Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa — is the most geographically accessible ITE provider in Aotearoa. With three campuses (Palmerston North, Albany/Auckland, and Wellington) and a significant distance/online delivery mode, Massey reaches teacher students who cannot access or do not want traditional campus-based programmes.
Massey offers the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDipTchg) — the latter a one-year graduate-entry pathway for those completing ITE quickly after an existing degree. Massey trains teachers for all year levels: ECE, primary, and secondary.
Distance delivery: Massey pioneered distance education in Aotearoa and that tradition is evident in its ITE offering. Many students complete coursework online while completing their practicum in their local region — making it the most practical option for people who cannot relocate to a main centre.
Why Distance ITE Works at Massey
Unlike some providers where distance means reduced quality, Massey has decades of pedagogical expertise in distributed learning. Key features:
- Local practicum placement: Students arrange placements in schools near them — the programme works with regional schools to ensure quality supervision regardless of location
- Online academic support: Robust online learning environments with regular virtual seminars, tutorials, and faculty contact
- Flexible pacing: Part-time and full-time study options make Massey accessible to people managing existing work or family commitments
- National coverage: Graduate teachers from Massey are distributed across all regions of NZ — including rural and remote areas that other providers don't reach
Cultural Competency and Māori Education
All Massey ITE programmes include compulsory engagement with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Tātaiako cultural competencies, and culturally responsive pedagogy. The Palmerston North campus has particular connections to the Manawatū Māori community and iwi of the region (Rangitāne o Manawatū). Massey also offers:
- Te reo Māori language papers integrated into ITE pathways
- Māori student support through Te Rau Puawai (the Māori mental health workforce development programme has a kindred model in ITE)
- Options to complete practicum in kura kaupapa and bilingual settings
- Connections to rural and regional Māori communities that urban providers don't access
Ideal If You...
- Live in a regional area and cannot relocate for ITE
- Need flexible study options due to work or family commitments
- Are completing a career change and want to move into teaching quickly (PGDipTchg)
- Are based in the Manawatū or central North Island
- Want to teach in rural NZ communities — Massey graduates are disproportionately well-distributed across the country
Mātauranga Māori Lens
Massey's ITE programmes engage with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and mātauranga Māori as foundations for professional practice. Tikanga and te ao Māori inform Massey's distributed learning model, and whanaungatanga — the relational dimension of teaching — is a consistent thread across campus and distance programmes.
Classroom Application
Use your understanding of Massey's model to reflect on how you build professional relationships at a distance. Next step: identify one aspect of your current classroom practice that could be strengthened by deeper engagement with tikanga or te ao Māori perspectives. Discuss with a mentor or critical friend.
