Te Tuhinga Reta Whakawai - Advocacy for Our Environment

"Ko te kupu te mātāpuna o te mana"

Words are the source of power - Use your voice to advocate for te taiao

📋 About This Template

A persuasive letter is a powerful tool for kaitiakitanga (guardianship). By writing to decision-makers, you can advocate for changes that protect our native species and ecosystems.

🌿 Te Ao Māori Connection

In te ao Māori, kōrero (speech/writing) has always been a way to advocate for the land. Historically, Māori leaders wrote letters and petitions to protect whenua and taonga. Today, you continue this tradition by using your voice to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves - our native plants and animals.

Tēnā koe Minister, Formal greeting
I am writing to urge you to increase funding for predator control in mainland sanctuaries. As a Year 9 student at Mangakōtukutuku College, I have been studying the impact of introduced predators on our native wildlife, and I am deeply concerned about the future of our taonga species. Introduction - state your purpose clearly
Firstly, research shows that possums, rats, and stoats kill approximately 25 million native birds each year. Our kiwi population has declined by 94% since European arrival, and without intervention, they may be extinct within our lifetimes. Furthermore, mainland sanctuaries like Zealandia have proven that with proper predator control, native species can recover dramatically. Body - evidence and facts
I understand that funding is limited, but investing in conservation creates jobs, supports tourism, and fulfills our responsibility as kaitiaki of Aotearoa. The Predator Free 2050 goal will not be achieved without significant investment now. Address counter-arguments
I respectfully ask that you consider allocating an additional $50 million to predator control programs in the upcoming budget. Our native species cannot wait. Clear call to action
Ngā mihi nui,
