Survey focus: principles that predate the technology
Ākonga examine kaitiakitanga as a body of practice with its own authority, and ask what it asks of a technology. Iwi- and hapū-held knowledge stays scoped to those who hold it.

Do Now | Tīmatanga Whakaaro (7 min)
Display on the board — 3 minutes individual writing, 4 minutes pair discussion:
"From last lesson: LCA maps five stages of a product's life. What does it NOT measure? What does it miss or leave out?"
Harvest responses without correcting them. Students typically identify: how workers feel about their conditions; whether communities gave consent; cultural significance of affected places; animals and ecosystems beyond pollution metrics; what happens to future generations who inherit the damage. All of these are valid gaps. Hold the list on the board — the lesson will name which of them kaitiakitanga specifically addresses.
Teacher note: If students have not done Lesson 11, adapt the prompt to: "What does sustainability mean? Who benefits from it, and over what timeframe?" The gap-finding orientation is the same. Students who completed the LCA audit will have richer, more specific responses — use peer-teaching in mixed groups if the class is mixed on prior knowledge.
Two Frameworks | Ngā Āhuatanga Rua (12 min)
Both LCA and kaitiakitanga ask designers to think beyond the immediate use of a product. But they ask different questions and produce different obligations. Neither replaces the other — they are complementary lenses.
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)
- Measures environmental inputs and outputs at each stage of a product's life
- Quantifies harm — carbon, water, toxins, energy
- Asks: how much damage? at which stage?
- Goal: reduce harm, optimise efficiency
- Timescale: the product's physical life (months to decades)
- Relationship to nature: transactional — inputs and outputs to be managed
Kaitiakitanga
- Places designers in a relationship of obligation to the natural world, communities, and future generations
- Does not only reduce harm — asks what must be restored
- Asks: who is affected? who gave consent? who benefits in 100 years?
- Goal: regenerate relationships between people, place, and technology
- Timescale: intergenerational — beyond the product's physical life
- Relationship to nature: relational — the designer is part of what they affect
Key distinction: LCA can tell a designer exactly how much CO₂ is emitted per kilometre of shipping. Kaitiakitanga asks a different question: do the people who live near those shipping lanes have any say in whether those ships come? Do they benefit from what is being shipped? What obligation does the designer have to them? These questions are not quantifiable. They require a different kind of reasoning — and a different kind of accountability.
Māori scholar Ann Salmond describes kaitiakitanga not as a management system but as a set of relationships — between people and land, between the living and the dead, between present and future. When those relationships are damaged by a technology, kaitiakitanga requires their repair, not just harm reduction going forward.

Watch for the design system: stars, ocean swells, birds, wind, memory, and collective practice. Which parts are material technologies, and which are knowledge technologies?
The clip presents navigation as a system of relationships between people, ocean, sky, species, and inherited knowledge. How does that challenge an LCA framework that measures mainly material inputs and outputs?
Teacher note: This TED-Ed source addresses Pacific-wide Polynesian wayfinding rather than one iwi's navigation practice. Use it to examine knowledge as technology and cultural continuity as a sustainability issue; do not present it as exhaustive authority for Māori navigation traditions. Indigenous Design Gallery | He Whakaaturanga (15 min)
Four examples of indigenous sustainable design. For each, identify the specific design principle and how it connects to kaitiakitanga. Students can read individually (5 min) then discuss in groups (10 min).
① Wharenui Construction
Traditional wharenui (meeting house) used timber — mainly tōtara and kahikatea — harvested selectively from forests managed by iwi. Bark was peeled rather than whole trees felled where possible. Buildings were designed to be repaired and extended over generations, not replaced. The structural system distributes loads across many smaller members rather than a few large ones — allowing repair without full rebuilding.
Kaitiakitanga principle: Design for repairability; use what the forest can regenerate; the building belongs to future generations, not the builders who constructed it.
② Tāniko Weaving
Tāniko is a traditional Māori twining technique using harakeke (flax) and kiekie fibres. Harakeke is harvested following the rule of never cutting the central shoot (rito) — which ensures the plant regenerates. The patterns encode knowledge about genealogy, environment, and relationships that exists nowhere else. A garment made with tāniko carries information, not just material.
Kaitiakitanga principle: Harvest protocols that ensure regeneration; design that encodes knowledge for future generations; material is never separate from relationship.
③ Rāhui
A rāhui is a temporary restriction placed on an area or resource by a tohunga or rangatira — closing a fishing ground, forest, or coastline to allow recovery. It is a technology for managing commons: a community-enforced exclusion with a defined endpoint, monitored by kaitiaki. Contemporary marine reserves operate on a similar principle, though without the same community consent structure and cultural authority.
Kaitiakitanga principle: Deliberate restraint is a design choice; community authority over shared resources; recovery is not passive — it requires active protection and someone accountable for it.
④ Pacific Navigation
Polynesian wayfinding navigated thousands of kilometres using stars, ocean swells, bird behaviour, and wind patterns — no instruments. This was a highly sophisticated knowledge system developed over centuries and encoded in chant, ceremony, and practice. When European contact disrupted those practices, the knowledge nearly vanished. The 20th-century revival required deliberate cultural reconstruction alongside navigation training.
Kaitiakitanga principle: Knowledge is a technology; cultural continuity is a sustainability issue; what cannot be written must be practised; the loss of practice is the loss of capability.
Discussion prompt: Which of these four examples could be described accurately using LCA terms? Which could not? Why does this matter for how we evaluate and protect them?

Apply Kaitiakitanga to Your Lesson 11 Product
Return to the product you mapped in the Lesson 11 LCA audit. Now apply kaitiakitanga alongside LCA — not instead of it. Work through the four questions below. Write specific responses, not general principles: name the community, the place, the material, the relationship.
Name one community that bears a cost from your product's life cycle but was not consulted about its design. What would genuine consultation require? What would that community likely ask for?
From the LCA, identify one place where a relationship — between a community and its land, or between workers and a safe environment — has been harmed. What would restoring it require from the designer today?
If 1 billion of these products are made over the next 20 years and end up in landfill, what is the inheritance? Name the specific materials and their persistence. What obligation does this create for the designer today?
If you had the authority of a kaitiaki, what temporary restriction would you place on this product's production or distribution right now — and under what conditions would you lift it?
Synthesis (whole class, 3 min): Share one response. As a group: which LCA stage does kaitiakitanga most change how we think about it? Is it raw materials, end-of-life, or somewhere else?
📓 Design Journal — Entry 12: Restoring What Has Been Lost
Write 3–4 sentences responding to this prompt:
"Kaitiakitanga asks designers not just to reduce harm, but to restore what has been lost. For the product you examined today: what would need to be restored — not just improved — if a designer took kaitiakitanga seriously? Who would decide what restoration means?"
Your entry should name one specific relationship, community, or place from today's lesson or your LCA audit. It should state what restoration would require — not just what harm would be reduced. It is acceptable to write that full restoration may not be possible — if so, say so, and say why.
Exit Claim | Whakamutunga (4 min)
On a slip of paper (anonymous, collected at the door):
"One kaitiakitanga principle I would add to my LCA framework is ______, because ______."
Teacher use: Look for responses that name relationships, communities, or timeframes that LCA does not capture. If most students name harm-reduction principles (which LCA already addresses), return to the key distinction in the next lesson: kaitiakitanga restores, it does not only reduce. Responses referencing specific communities, ancestral obligation, or future generations indicate the relational framing has landed.

This lesson addresses the NZ Curriculum Technology strand: Technological Knowledge — Technology and Society. Students examine how cultural values shape design decisions — specifically how kaitiakitanga as a Māori value system produces different design obligations than Western sustainability frameworks. Te Mātaiaho emphasises the centrality of te Tiriti and mātauranga Māori across all learning areas; this lesson applies that directly to technological practice.
Social Sciences connections: Aotearoa New Zealand Histories strand — understanding how Māori relationships with environment and technology have been shaped by colonisation and reclaimed through cultural revival (waka hourua). Relevant for deepening teacher understanding — not for direct classroom use at this level.
If a kaumātua or cultural expert is available: This lesson benefits from a kaitiaki voice — someone who can speak to what kaitiakitanga means in practice for a specific place. Brief them on the LCA context and ask: "What does kaitiakitanga demand of someone who designs a product whose waste ends up in a waterway your iwi cares for?" If your school has an iwi relationship, this is an ideal lesson to activate it.
🔄 Differentiation
For students who need more support: Provide a partially-completed redesign challenge with sentence starters for each of the four questions. For the gallery, reduce to two examples (wharenui + rāhui) for focused depth rather than breadth. For the journal entry, allow oral response recorded by the student or transcribed with teacher support.
For students who move faster: Research Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae in West Auckland — a Māori-led community enterprise applying kaitiakitanga principles to food, waste, and technology in an urban context. How do their commitments differ from corporate sustainability claims? What makes the difference substantive rather than rhetorical?
For students with Māori or Pacific backgrounds: Invite — never require — students to share their own knowledge of kaitiakitanga, kaitiaki roles, or their iwi's specific relationships with particular places. This lesson can reverse the normal dynamic: the student may know more than the teacher about how a concept applies in their rohe. That authority should be visible and honoured.
For students who question the distinction between kaitiakitanga and sustainability: Engage it directly. Acknowledge the genuine similarity (both involve long-term thinking) and name the precise difference: kaitiakitanga does not start from resource management — it starts from relational obligation. A kaitiaki is not a manager. They are a guardian with accountability to ancestors and descendants, not to efficiency metrics. This is a substantive distinction, not a semantic preference.
