Students will know
- That communicating a design to an audience is a distinct skill from building it — it requires explaining both what the design does and why those choices were made, including the trade-offs that were accepted.
- That a showcase is not a performance of completed mastery — it is a sharing of honest work, including the gaps and limitations that the designer recognises and the peer reviewer surfaced.
- That LCA and kaitiakitanga are not technical boxes to tick — they are frameworks that change what questions get asked in design, and whose interests get counted as design criteria.
Students will demonstrate
- By presenting their prototype and brief to an audience (gallery walk or panel), explaining the LCA trade-offs and kaitiakitanga obligation in language accessible to a non-specialist.
- By responding to at least one audience question using LCA or kaitiakitanga reasoning — not just "my design is good" but "here's the specific evidence from the life cycle analysis."
- By completing Design Journal Entry 20: naming the single most significant thing this unit changed about how they think about technology, and one question it opened that they want to pursue further.
Opening Video: Students Leading Climate Action (10 min)

Teacher framing (before playing): "This is a video about a global education project that connected hundreds of thousands of students to work on real climate solutions. As you watch, think about one thing: what did these students produce that was actually useful — and what made it useful rather than just a school project?"
After the video (brief discussion — 2 min): "The designs and research produced by students in that project had real audiences — local governments, communities, NGOs. Your designs today have a real audience too: each other, and whoever you share them with after today. The question of whether a design is 'just a school project' or genuinely useful depends on whether it's grounded in real constraints and real criteria — which is exactly what the brief and LCA-kaitiakitanga framework have been building."
Showcase Setup | Te Whakarite (5 min)
Choose one format based on class size and available space. Either format works — the key is that every design is shared with an audience who can ask questions.
Option A: Gallery Walk
Students arrange their prototypes and briefs on desks around the room. Audience members rotate in groups of 2–3, spending 3–4 minutes at each design. Designer stays with their work and answers questions. Rotate until each group has visited 3–4 designs. Works best for classes of 20–30.
Option B: Panel Presentations
4–6 students selected (by teacher or volunteer) present to the full class in sequence — 3 minutes each plus 2 minutes questions. Remaining students rotate peer feedback forms. Works best for classes wanting shared discussion of a smaller number of designs. Ensure all designs are displayed even if not all are presented.
- The Questioner: Asks at least one LCA question to each design: "Where does the energy come from in your use stage?" or "What happens to this material when it's replaced?"
- The Kaitiaki Voice: Asks at least one kaitiakitanga question: "Who has mana over the waterway your design uses?" or "What would future generations say about this design in 50 years?"
- The Reporter: Takes brief notes and names one design they saw that surprised them — and why — in the unit reflection at the end.
Showcase Presentations | Ngā Whakaaturanga (25 min)
Designer Presentation Guide — 3 Minutes Per Design
Each designer should cover these four points in their 3 minutes. Audiences should listen without interrupting — questions come after.
Name the specific context and the harm or limitation your design addresses. "I'm designing a rainwater harvesting system for a marae in Tāmaki Makaurau that currently spends $X per quarter on mains water, with no backup during drought restrictions."
Walk the audience through the prototype — what are the components, how do they work together, what does the system do? Avoid explaining what you were trying to do; show what the design actually does.
Name one place your design improves the life cycle (with evidence) and one LCA gap that remains — something you couldn't fully solve within the brief constraints. Honest acknowledgement of limitations is a sign of good design thinking.
Name the kaitiakitanga obligation in your brief and how your design honours or falls short of it. Who are the kaitiaki of this domain, and what would they say about this design?
Teacher note on questions: After each presentation (or during gallery walk), audience members in the Questioner and Kaitiaki Voice roles should ask their questions. Model the first round yourself to establish the register: "I can see the rainwater tank addresses use-stage water demand — but I want to ask about the manufacturing stage. What material is the tank made from, and where does that come from?" Questions should be genuine and specific, not evaluative ("I thought it was really good").
Unit Reflection | He Whakaaro Whakamuri (5 min)
Whole-class discussion — teacher-facilitated, 5 minutes:
"What do we know now that we didn't know 10 lessons ago?"
Take 5–6 student responses. Aim for responses that cross domains — things about LCA, kaitiakitanga, NZ infrastructure, or the design process that weren't part of students' thinking at the start of the unit. The teacher's role is to name the pattern: "You're describing something about how technology design usually works, and how this unit changed the questions you ask."
Optional synthesis prompt: "The Reporter role was meant to notice one design that surprised them. Can we hear from two or three Reporters what they saw?" This surfaces the diversity of design approaches across the class and ends the discussion with specific examples rather than generalities.
📓 Design Journal — Entry 20 (Final): What This Unit Opened
Write 4–5 sentences responding to these two questions — your final Design Journal entry for this unit:
"What is the single most significant thing this unit changed about how you think about technology — not what you learned, but how you think? And what question did this unit open that you want to pursue further — in a future unit, in your own time, or in the place where you live?"
The most valuable final entries name something specific — a particular moment, a particular lesson, a particular realisation about LCA or kaitiakitanga — rather than summarising everything the unit covered. The question you want to pursue further is the most important thing: it shows that the unit produced genuine intellectual appetite, not just completed assessments.

This unit has been about multiple voices in how we understand and design technology: the voice of engineering and life cycle science, the voice of kaitiakitanga and relational obligation, the voice of communities whose land and water technology depends on, and your own voice as designers. None of these voices is more important than the others. Good technology design requires all of them.

📋 Curriculum Alignment
This lesson addresses the NZ Curriculum Technology strand: Technological Practice — Outcome Development and Evaluation — evaluating designs against specified criteria and communicating design decisions to an audience. The showcase is the primary evidence moment for: Technology — brief development and prototype; English — presenting and communicating; Social Sciences — evaluating decisions that affect communities and environments.
Assessment opportunity: The Lesson 20 showcase is the natural summative point for the unit. Evidence collected: Design Journal entries 11–20 (individual thinking across all domains), design brief (brief-development competency), prototype (outcome-development competency), peer review response (evaluation competency), and showcase presentation (communication and Key Competencies).

- Optional: invite an external audience — parents, another class, a teacher from another subject area, or a community member with genuine interest in the design domain
External audience note: A single kaitiaki or Māori community member present at the showcase has significant pedagogical value — their questions about the kaitiakitanga dimensions of student designs come from a different kind of authority than the teacher's. If this is not possible for Lesson 20, the teacher can play the Kaitiaki Voice role themselves with genuine rigour.
🔄 Differentiation and Accessibility
For students anxious about presenting: Gallery walk format is lower-stakes than panel — the designer stays with their work and responds conversationally rather than presenting to the full class. Pair students who are anxious with their peer reviewer so they have support during the gallery walk.
For students who are strong presenters: Challenge them to present without notes — working only from the physical prototype — and to answer questions that push outside their brief (e.g. "What if you were designing this for a community with no access to capital?").
For students with incomplete prototypes: An incomplete prototype with honest acknowledgement of what's missing is far more valuable than a rushed or superficial completion. Brief students who didn't finish: "Your job in the showcase is to show what you did get done, explain the gap honestly, and describe what you would do if you had more time."
🏁 Unit Completion — What This Unit Achieved
This is the final lesson of a 10-lesson sequence (Lessons 11–20) that provides the LCA-kaitiakitanga analytical track for the Sustainable Technology unit. The earlier sequence (Lessons 1–10) provides the design-thinking and engineering fundamentals track. Both tracks are intentional and complementary — teachers can sequence them in either order, or interleave lessons across the two tracks depending on student readiness and curriculum context.
What students have built across Lessons 11–20:
- A dual analytical framework (LCA + kaitiakitanga) that they can apply to any technology domain
- Domain knowledge across eight sustainable technology areas: e-waste, indigenous design, renewable energy, sustainable materials, energy efficiency, smart cities and transport, water technology, food systems
- A Design Journal with 10 entries that represents their genuine intellectual engagement with each domain
- A prototype design and brief that demonstrates brief-development and outcome-evaluation competencies
- Experience with peer review using a shared framework — the kind of collaborative design critique that professional designers use
What this unit does not finish: It opens questions. The kaitiakitanga framework, the food sovereignty debate, the trade-offs between vertical farming and regenerative agriculture, the question of who has mana over NZ's freshwater — these are not resolved. A unit that leaves students with genuine questions is doing its job.
