He Kōrero mō te Aromatawai | What This Assessment Is

The Showcase is not a celebration of success. It is an exercise in civic accountability.

A design that acknowledges its limitations is more trustworthy than one that claims to solve everything. Students who say "my design addresses X but not Y, and here is why that trade-off was the right call" are demonstrating higher-order thinking than students who present a problem-free solution. There are no problem-free solutions. A Showcase that pretends otherwise has not engaged with the real difficulty of sustainable design.

The marking guide rewards honesty about trade-offs and complexity of thinking — not presentation polish or prototype quality. A well-reasoned argument made with a scrappy prototype beats a glossy presentation with shallow reasoning every time.

Students will demonstrate

  • They can identify a real environmental or sustainability problem and explain its scope with evidence.
  • They can describe a design process — what they tried, what failed, and what they changed.
  • They can evaluate their design against the six fit-for-purpose attributes and kaitiakitanga.
  • They can acknowledge the trade-offs their design makes and explain why each was the right call.
  • They can respond to critical questions from an audience without becoming defensive.

The Design Journal is the evidence

The Journal (Sections 1–9) is the primary assessment document. The pitch is the public presentation of the Journal. Assessment of the Journal and the pitch are weighted equally.

  • Journal: 9 sections from L1–L9, each showing a specific layer of thinking
  • Pitch: 5 min structured presentation + 1 min audience question
  • Peer feedback: structured observation form submitted after each pitch

Setup | Whakarite (before ākonga arrive)

The room configuration signals that this is different from a regular lesson. Options:

  • Marketplace / gallery walk: Students set up their prototype and Design Journal at a station; audience circulates; pitches are delivered multiple times to small groups. Works well for classes of 25+ or when the teacher wants to hear every student personally.
  • Panel presentation: Students present to a seated audience (class + optional guests). A panel of 2–3 audience members (teacher + one student + optional community member or another teacher) asks questions after each pitch. Works well when you want full-class listening and a clear assessment moment.
  • Guest audience: Invite whānau, another teacher, a community member with relevant expertise (local environmental group, council sustainability advisor, kaumātua). An outside audience raises the bar without changing the format. Even one guest creates genuine accountability.

What students need at their station / for their pitch: their Design Journal (open to Section 7 — Design Brief), their prototype or design diagram, one visual aid (optional: a single A3 sheet or phone screenshot showing their Life Cycle Map from Section 3). Nothing else. The pitch is built from their Journal, not from a slide deck.

Pitch Structure | Te Hanganga o te Kōrero (5 minutes each)

Each student or group follows this structure. Display it on the board so the audience can follow along and so students have a visible scaffold during their pitch.

1 · The Problem — 60 seconds

Name the environmental or sustainability problem you chose to address. Where did you first see it? What evidence from Lesson 2 or 3 shows this is a real, significant problem — not just a personal preference? Make it specific to your community or context if you can.

2 · What You Learned — 60 seconds

What did you discover through the knowledge framework lessons (1–6) that changed how you understood the problem? Name at least one thing that surprised you — from the life cycle map, the circular economy principles, or the kaitiakitanga framework. What did you think before this unit that you now know is wrong or incomplete?

3 · Your Design — 90 seconds

Describe your design solution. Show the prototype or diagram. Explain the key design decisions: what materials you chose and why, which fit-for-purpose attributes you prioritised, how you incorporated at least one kaitiakitanga constraint. This is not a list of features — it is a justified argument for why each choice was the right one.

4 · Trade-offs & Limitations — 60 seconds

Every design makes trade-offs. Name at least one thing your design does not solve, and explain why you made that choice. This is the most important part of the pitch. A designer who can say "I chose to prioritise X over Y because Z" is a designer who can be trusted with real problems. A designer who says "my design solves everything" cannot.

5 · What Next — 30 seconds

If you had more time and resources — what is the one next step you would take? What would it take to actually implement or scale this design in your school or community?

After each pitch — 1 audience question:

One member of the audience (rotate so different students lead) asks: "What is the weakest part of your design?" The presenter must answer honestly. If they deflect or claim there is no weak part, the teacher asks it again. This question generates the best thinking of the entire Showcase — and it is modelled on how real design reviews work.

Aromatawai | Marking Guide

Applied to both the Design Journal (read before the Showcase) and the pitch (observed during). Use holistically — a student who writes a brilliant Journal but struggles to present it, or vice versa, should be assessed on the quality of their thinking across both.

Beginning (1–2)

Identifies a problem and presents a design. Makes design choices but does not explain the reasoning. Design Journal sections are present but brief. Trade-offs not acknowledged. Prototype may be polished but the thinking is surface-level.

Developing (3–4)

Explains the reasoning behind at least two key design choices. Identifies one genuine trade-off. Journal shows consistent engagement across lessons — not just the final sections. Responds to the "weakest part" question with a real answer.

Proficient (5–6)

Shows connections between phases: the Life Cycle Map (Section 3) informs the Design Brief (Section 7). The kaitiakitanga framework (Section 6) is visible in the prototype (Section 8). Acknowledges what the design does not solve and explains why that choice was made. Design Journal reads as a coherent argument, not a series of separate tasks.

Extended (7–8)

Genuine civic accountability: explains what it would take to implement or scale the design, who would resist and why, and what the unintended consequences might be. Draws meaningfully on two or more knowledge systems (NZ design thinking + Māori and/or Pacific practice). Design Journal has a clear through-line from Section 1 to Section 9 — the student's thinking has visibly changed and they can articulate how. The pitch would make you want to fund it — not because it is polished, but because it is honest.

Structured Peer Feedback | He Tūāoma (during pitches)

Each student completes one feedback form per pitch they observe. This is not optional — it is part of the assessment for the observer, and it creates an audience that listens rather than waits for their turn.

Collect these at the end of the lesson. Good peer feedback is evidence of learning — a student who can identify what someone else's design does well and ask a genuine question about trade-offs has understood what the unit was about. Weak feedback ("good job") is as informative to the teacher as a weak pitch.

Class Debrief | Whakaaro (10 min)

After all pitches, open a brief class discussion. These questions work better than "what did you think?":

  • "Which design would you actually implement in this school, and why?" — forces students to apply the fit-for-purpose criteria from a decision-maker's perspective, not just a designer's.
  • "Which design had the most honest account of its trade-offs?" — rewards intellectual honesty and names it explicitly as a quality.
  • "What problem did no one design for that you think is actually the biggest issue?" — points toward what the class collectively sees but no single student could solve, which is how real sustainability challenges work.

Whakaaro Whakamutunga | Closing Reflection

This is what you say to close the unit. Read it or paraphrase it — but say something like it:

"You have spent nine lessons studying one of the most difficult problems human beings face: how do you build things without destroying what you depend on to live? There is no clean answer to that question. Every technology is a trade-off. Every design is a compromise. What this unit was trying to build in you is not a solution — it is a kind of thinking: the ability to see the full cost of a choice, to ask who bears it, and to design with the people who come after you already in the room.

The concept that names this in te reo Māori is kaitiakitanga — guardianship. Not just of the environment, but of the relationship between humans and the systems that sustain them. You are the generation that will inherit the decisions being made right now. The question this unit ends with is the same one it began with: what would it mean to design something that gives back to the world that made it?"

📋 Teacher Planning Snapshot

Logistics

  • Book the room in advance — you need flexible seating, even for a class of 30.
  • Time management: 5 min pitch + 1 min question = 6 min per student. For a class of 25, that is 2.5 hours in total. Use the gallery walk format for large classes so pitches happen in parallel, or split the Showcase over two periods.
  • If using a guest audience: confirm 3–4 days in advance. Brief them on the marking guide and the "weakest part" question protocol.
  • Record pitches (with student consent) for assessment review if needed.

Feedback to students

Return marked Design Journals within one week of the Showcase. Written feedback should name one specific moment where the student's thinking was genuinely strong (not "good effort") and one specific thing to develop further. Generic feedback ("shows understanding of sustainability") is not useful. Specific feedback ("the connection you made between the maramataka harvesting calendar in Section 6 and your seasonal harvest proposal in Section 7 is exactly the kind of kaitiakitanga-as-constraint thinking this unit was aiming for") is.
