Pepeha Self-Assessment Checklist
Use this before presenting your pepeha or mihimihi. The goal is accuracy, respect, and growing confidence.
Mātauranga Māori lens: Pepeha and mihimihi build whanaungatanga and should be shared with tikanga, consent, and care for whakapapa knowledge.
Success Criteria
I can identify what is ready, what needs practice, and what identity information should stay private or still be checked.
What to print
Print one checklist per student before presentation rehearsal. Students keep it with their final speaking draft.

- I have not invented iwi, hapū, waka, maunga, awa, or whānau information.
- Any personal information I share is safe and I have permission to share it.
- I can explain what each line means in English.
Language
- I have checked the order of my lines.
- I have checked macrons and spelling for names.
- I have practised long vowels and the "ng" sound.
- I know which line I need to slow down for.
Delivery
- I can begin with a greeting such as "Tēnā koutou katoa".
- I can speak clearly enough for my audience to hear.
- I can pause between lines.
- I can finish respectfully.
Respect
- I understand that pepeha and mihimihi are more than a memory task.
- I will listen respectfully to other students' choices.
- I will not pressure anyone to share private identity information.
- I can say "Kei te ako tonu au" if I am still learning.
