Structuring Excellence Answers in Level 3 Modern Physics
Video Clip: Quantum Mechanics Part 1 — CrashCourse Physics #43: wave-particle duality and the photoelectric effect as exam context (Runtime: 8m 45s).
🧠 1. Before Viewing (Activate & Predict)
What separates an Achieved calculation from an Excellence physical explanation in NCEA Level 3 Modern Physics?
👁️ 2. During Viewing (Watch With a Job)
- Key concepts: the video covers wave-particle duality and the photoelectric effect. List every physics term it introduces — these are the concepts likely to appear in Level 3 Physics exam questions.
- Explanation depth: the video gives a conceptual explanation, not just equations. For the photoelectric effect, write a 3-sentence Excellence-level answer that explains the mechanism (not just the formula).
- Quantum weirdness: the video acknowledges that quantum mechanics is strange. How should an NCEA Excellence answer treat ideas that seem counterintuitive? (Evidence + model + acknowledge limits = Excellence.)

⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now: Modern Physics Recall (10 mins)
Same physics, different grade. Two students both write that the photoelectric effect proves light is particulate. One gets Achieved, one Excellence.
Two minutes: write what separates them. Keep it and test it against the criteria in Activity 1. In this standard the difference is usually that Excellence names which specific observation rules out which specific alternative — a claim without that is unsupported.
📖 Activity 1: Physics Concept Exploration & Problem Solving (25 mins)
Grade three answers (15 min). Award Achieved, Merit or Excellence to each provided answer and mark the sentence earning it. Then state the pattern: Achieved states the result, Merit explains the physics, Excellence links evidence to conclusion and rules out the alternative.
Upgrade your own (10 min). Take a Merit-level answer from your portfolio and rewrite it to Excellence by adding the ruled-out alternative and the decisive observation. Underline what you added. Check your units and significant figures while you are there — they are assessed.
📝 Activity 2: Level 3 Physics Portfolio Task & Merit/Excellence Scaffolding (20 mins)
Portfolio — Section 9. Submit: (1) three graded answers with grade-earning sentences marked; (2) your statement of the Achieved/Merit/Excellence pattern; (3) one upgraded answer with additions underlined and units checked throughout.
