🎯 Ngā Whāinga Akoranga | Learning Intentions
The 2-phase process of photosynthesis: Light-Dependent Phase (thylakoid/grana) and Light-Independent Phase (stroma / Calvin Cycle).
Trace energy pathways from light photon absorption to glucose synthesis, and analyse factors affecting photosynthetic rate.

🧠 1. Before Viewing (Activate & Predict)
How do plants convert radiant solar photons into chemical bond energy in glucose?
👁️ 2. During Viewing (Watch With a Job)
- Watch for: Locate the light-dependent processes on thylakoid membranes and track water, oxygen, ATP and NADPH.
- Watch for: Locate light-independent processes in the stroma and track carbon dioxide and carbohydrate production.
- Watch for: Record how the products of one process group support the other.
🗣️ 3. After Viewing & Kaiako Move (Process & Apply)
Kaiako move: Require arrows between the two process groups rather than two disconnected lists.
Immediate task: Open Learner Evidence Pack · Sheet 4.
⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now: Cell Recall Challenge (5 mins)
Where does a tree's mass come from? A tree can gain hundreds of kilograms while the soil around it barely changes weight.
Two minutes, and commit to an answer: soil, water, or air? Then say which molecule supplies the carbon, and where in the plant it gets fixed into something solid. Most people get this wrong on first instinct — write yours down before Activity 1.
📖 Activity 1: Two-process organiser (20 mins)
Trace the system (12 min). Complete the supplied chloroplast organiser with locations, inputs, outputs and energy carriers. ATP and NADPH must visibly connect the two process groups.
Explain a plateau (8 min). Use the supplied light-intensity pattern to explain why rate first increases and then levels off when another factor becomes limiting.
Supplied inputs
- Learner Evidence Pack · Sheet 4 — two-process organiser and limiting-factor prompt
- Kaiako Guide · Lesson 4 — indicative links and limiting-factor cues
📝 Activity 2: Portfolio evidence (15 mins)
Complete Portfolio Section 4. For the 5-minute exit check, state where the carbon in newly made carbohydrate comes from and where that carbon is fixed.
🏫 Kaiako Planning & Pedagogy Notes
Level 2 Biology focus: the 2026 specification explicitly includes both light-dependent and light-independent photosynthesis. See Kaiako Guide · Lesson 4.
