One major issue with AI image tools is that they often repeat social bias while sounding neutral. When tested with prompts about Māori and Indigenous people, some systems produce narrow, stereotyped outputs instead of showing the full reality of contemporary life. This matters because people may trust the result simply because it looks polished or “objective”.
A strong example of bias happens when an AI system only shows Māori people through traditional or historic imagery and leaves out professional, urban, or everyday settings. That is not just an accuracy problem. It is also an issue of power, because the system is deciding which identities are visible and which ones are treated as less real.
From an Aotearoa perspective, this becomes more serious when Māori knowledge or imagery is treated like public content that can be copied without context or consent. The whare (meeting house) is a place of kōrero, where multiple perspectives are heard before decisions are made. Tikanga requires that arguments be made with integrity and respect (mana). Māori oratory (whaikōrero) is a sophisticated critical tradition — whakataukī encode compressed wisdom that often challenges surface-level thinking.
