Lesson 9: Complex Patterns 1 - Diphthongs & Alternative Spellings
π― Learning Objectives
- Students understand that some vowel sounds are made by two vowels gliding together (diphthongs)
- Students can identify and read words with oi/oy and ou/ow patterns
- Students recognise alternative spellings for the same sound
- Students apply knowledge of complex patterns to decode unfamiliar words
- Students understand that English has multiple ways to spell the same sound
Success Criteria (Δkonga-facing)
- I can read words with oi/oy and ou/ow patterns.
- I can spot alternative spellings for the same sound.
- I can use these patterns to decode new words.
Kupu / Vocabulary
- diphthong β two vowel sounds gliding together
- alternative spelling β different way to spell a sound
- vowel sound β sound made by a vowel
- pattern β repeated spelling rule
- glide β move from one sound to another
- decode β sound out and read
π₯ Media Anchor (6 mins)
Video: How Do βOIβ & βOYβ Sound? | StoryBots: Learn to Read | Netflix Jr
Purpose: Gather examples for one diphthong spelling pair before comparing all four target graphemes.
- Before: Display one oi word and one oy word; predict the shared sound and the evidence to collect.
- During β watch the full 1:19: Capture examples under oi and oy, including where each grapheme appears in the word.
- Kaiako move: Name the clip's limited oi/oy scope and avoid turning a noticed position pattern into an exceptionless rule.
- After: Add kaiako-supplied ou/ow cards and build a four-column comparison.
- Immediate use: Carry the four-column record into the lesson's two diphthong teaching blocks.
- Support / stretch: Support with picture cards; stretch by proposing and testing a tentative spelling-position pattern.
π¦ Materials Needed
Teacher Materials:
- 'The Code' diphthong cards (oi, oy, ou, ow)
- Sound comparison charts
- Picture cards for diphthong words
- Whiteboard and coloured markers
- Alternative spelling reference sheets
Student Materials:
- Individual diphthong cards
- Word sorting mats
- Spelling choice worksheets
- Pencils and erasers
- Small whiteboards and markers
1. Warm-Up: Vowel Sound Journey (6 mins)
Teacher Script: "We've learned about vowel sounds that stay in one place. Today we'll discover vowel sounds that take a journey - they start in one place and glide to another!"
Sound Journey Demonstration:
- Listen: Say "boy" slowly - notice how the sound moves from /o/ to /i/
- Listen: Say "cow" slowly - notice how it moves from /a/ to /oo/
- Movement: Use hand gestures to show the gliding motion
- Discovery: "These are called diphthongs - sounds that glide!"
2. Teaching oi/oy Diphthong (10 mins)
Systematic Introduction: Teach the /oi/ sound with its two common spellings.
oi spelling:
- Sound: /oi/ (like in "oil")
- Position: Usually in the middle of words
- Words: oil, coin, point, join
- Memory: "oi in the middle"
oy spelling:
- Sound: /oi/ (like in "boy")
- Position: Usually at the end of words
- Words: boy, toy, joy, enjoy
- Memory: "oy at the end"
Teaching Process:
- Teach the /oi/ sound first (without spelling)
- Show that this sound has two different spellings
- Teach the position pattern (oi middle, oy end)
- Practice with examples and exceptions
- Apply to reading and spelling new words
3. Teaching ou/ow Diphthong (12 mins)
Second Diphthong: Introduce the /ou/ sound with its spelling variations.
ou spelling:
- Sound: /ou/ (like in "out")
- Position: Usually in the middle of words
- Words: out, house, about, count
- Memory: "ou in the middle"
ow spelling:
- Sound: /ou/ (like in "cow")
- Position: Usually at the end of words
- Words: cow, how, now, brown
- Memory: "ow at the end"
Important Note About 'ow':
Challenge: 'ow' can make two different sounds!
- /ou/ sound: cow, how, now (diphthong)
- /Ε/ sound: snow, grow, show (long o)
- Strategy: Try both sounds to see which makes sense
4. Spelling Choice Practice (12 mins)
Decision Making: Students practise choosing the correct spelling for diphthong sounds.
Spelling Choice Activities:
oi or oy?
- b___ (boy/boi) β boy
- c___n (coin/coyn) β coin
- t___ (toy/toi) β toy
- p___nt (point/poynt) β point
ou or ow?
- c___ (cow/cou) β cow
- h___se (house/howse) β house
- n___ (now/nou) β now
- ab___t (about/abowt) β about
5. Independent Practice & Exit Ticket (5 mins)
Exit Ticket Task
"Read these words: 'enjoy', 'sound', 'brown'. Then write the correct spelling for these sounds: /oi/ at the end of a word, /ou/ in the middle of a word."
Success Criteria:
- Emerging: Reads most diphthong words correctly, identifies some spelling patterns
- Developing: Reads all words correctly and applies position rules accurately
- Secure: Demonstrates confident understanding of diphthongs and spelling choices
π Assessment & Differentiation
Formative Assessment:
- Observe diphthong sound production
- Check spelling pattern recognition
- Monitor position rule application
- Assess decoding of new diphthong words
Support Strategies:
- Struggling: Focus on one diphthong at a time, use gesture cues
- Confident: Introduce au/aw patterns, explore exceptions
- ELL Support: Compare to diphthong sounds in home language
