Source: Each learner's before/after work, kaiako records, and consented whฤnau voice, integrated into the reflection and celebration time below.
Purpose: Centre the learner's own evidence of growth instead of an unrelated external video.
- Before: Select one before/after pair and one success criterion that can show change.
- During: Annotate what changed / evidence / next step while the kaiako conferences and records only necessary assessment evidence.
- Kaiako move: Avoid equating celebration with universal โmasteryโ and protect consent and privacy for learner or whฤnau voice.
- After: Use a gallery/whakanuia protocol in which peers name one evidenced growth point, then each learner sets a goal.
- Immediate use: Carry the annotated evidence into next-step recommendations and the whฤnau summary.
- Support / stretch: Support with oral or scribed reflection and visual prompts; stretch by explaining which strategy caused the change.

1. Learning Journey Reflection (8 mins)
Purpose: Help students recognise and appreciate their literacy growth over the 16-lesson unit.
Teacher Script: "Sixteen lessons ago, we started our literacy journey together. Let's look back at how far you've travelled as readers and writers!"
Reflection Activities:
- Portfolio Review: Students look through work samples from Lesson 1 vs. now
- Progress Charts: Show visual progress in reading fluency and accuracy
- Code Mastery: Quick review of all phonics patterns learned
- Confidence Check: "How do you feel about reading now vs. at Lesson 1?"
Growth Mindset Focus: Emphasise effort, progress, and learning rather than just achievement levels.
2. Comprehensive Assessment (20 mins)
Assessment Overview: A multi-part assessment that demonstrates student mastery across all phonics concepts learned.
Part 1: Sound Recognition (5 mins)
- Flash 'Code' cards from throughout unit
- Students say the sound for each pattern
- Include: basic phonemes, digraphs, long vowels, r-controlled
- Success: 90%+ accuracy
Part 2: Word Reading (8 mins)
- Graded word lists (simple โ complex)
- Include real and nonsense words
- Test: CVC, digraphs, long vowels, r-controlled, multisyllabic
- Success: Age-appropriate fluency and accuracy
Part 3: Spelling Dictation (4 mins)
- Dictate words representing key patterns
- Include morphology (prefixes/suffixes)
- Sample words: ship, cake, nurse, unhappy, playing
