- Year level: Years 7-10 | Duration: ongoing modular use across the year, with short explicit mini-lessons and repeated application in current class writing.
- Curriculum integration: Best used as a reusable writing spine across English and inquiry work so students revisit the same craft language in multiple genres rather than learning skills once and dropping them.
- Mātauranga Māori: Writing in Aotearoa should make space for whakapapa, local voice, and the storytelling traditions already present in pūrākau, waiata, and whaikōrero. Mana motuhake, manaakitanga, and whanaungatanga matter here because writers are learning to shape their own voice while responding respectfully to the stories and perspectives of others.
- Entry support: Start with strong models, sentence frames, oral rehearsal, and a visible scaffold that names one writing focus at a time so hesitant writers are not overloaded by too many simultaneous expectations.
- On-level: Most learners can analyse a mentor text, practise one craft move in isolation, then apply it to their own draft before receiving short targeted feedback from a partner or kaiako.
- Extension: Challenge confident writers to compare two mentor texts, identify the rhetorical or stylistic choices each writer makes, and then imitate or adapt those moves in a polished piece for a real audience.
Inclusion and Accessibility
- ESOL / ELL: Pre-teach vocabulary for tone, audience, and text structure, offer bilingual brainstorming where useful, and let students rehearse ideas orally before turning them into written sentences.
- Accessibility: Provide graphic organisers, speech-to-text or keyboarding options, chunked checklists, and model paragraphs with clear spacing so students can focus on the writing move being taught.
- Neurodiverse learners: Support neurodiverse writers with predictable routines, reduced copying load, explicit examples, and short feedback cycles that separate idea generation, drafting, and editing into manageable steps.
