Ākonga explore taha tinana through movement quality rather than fitness scores, appearance, or comparison. They test control, flow, comfortable range, and safety; learn to observe evidence; adapt a movement task for a composite access need; and choreograph an inclusive micro-sequence. Every task has seated, standing, low-impact, and observer/design pathways.

Do Now · Quality Before Spectacle
5 minWhat it is: a movement comparison that makes “better” mean controlled and fit for purpose, not bigger or harder.
Run it
- Compare (2 min): Performer A makes a large jump but lands off balance. Performer B makes a small step across a marker, lands where intended, and can continue smoothly.
- Choose (1 min): who shows stronger movement quality for this task?
- Prove (2 min): use two evidence words: control, balance, flow, range, safety, or readiness for the next movement.
Activity 1 · Movement Quality Lab
15 minWhat it is: a choice-based station lab using safe foundations from dance, gymnastics, and obstacle navigation.
Balance & finish
Choose a seated shape, supported standing balance, or step-and-stick. Hold only a comfortable position.
Flow & transition
Link three teacher-modelled shapes or gestures without rushing the change between them.
Range & control
Move shoulders, arms, torso, or ankles through a comfortable range while keeping breath easy.
Route & awareness
Travel, wheel, or direct a pathway around floor markers with space, control, and a clear finish.
Run it
- Prepare (3 min): teacher models each station, the stop signal, safe spacing, and three participation pathways: mover, seated mover, or observer/designer.
- Explore (8 min): groups visit two stations. Try, notice one quality, and adjust one feature.
- Compare (2 min): identify which adjustment improved quality and why.
- Reset (2 min): return equipment and record one evidence word for each station visited.
Activity 2 · Coach the Evidence
15 minWhat it is: pairs replace praise, comparison, and body judgement with precise observation.
Control
The movement starts, changes, and finishes as intended.
Flow
Transitions connect rather than appearing as separate, rushed pieces.
Flexible range
The mover uses a comfortable range that supports the task; “farther” is not automatically better.
Safety & choice
Space, pace, level, and pathway fit the mover and the surroundings.
Run it
- Select (2 min): choose one station action or observe the teacher model.
- First attempt (3 min): the mover chooses a pathway; the observer records only visible evidence.
- Coach (3 min): give one cue: “I noticed ___. Try ___ so that ___.” No rating or comparison.
- Second attempt (3 min): repeat or redesign; the mover decides whether the cue fits.
- Swap or analyse (4 min): change roles, or jointly analyse two teacher demonstrations.
Activity 3 · Adapt the Task, Not the Person
15 minWhat it is: groups redesign a task so the learning goal remains while a participation barrier changes.
Composite A · Mika
Mika uses a wheelchair. The route's learning goal is controlled direction changes, but two markers are too close together.
Composite B · Sasha
Sasha needs a low-impact option today. The learning goal is a stable finish, not jumping height.
Composite C · Noor
Noor participates best with a predictable order and less noise. The station currently changes instructions without warning.
Run it
- Protect the goal (3 min): underline the movement quality the task is meant to teach.
- Find the barrier (3 min): locate it in space, equipment, instruction, pace, or pathway—not in the person.
- Redesign (5 min): change at least two task features while keeping the learning goal.
- Test on paper (2 min): trace how the adapted task works from start to finish.
- Explain (2 min): state how the change improves access, safety, and movement quality.
Activity 4 · Inclusive Micro-sequence
20 minWhat it is: groups choreograph, test, and refine a short sequence with equivalent participation pathways.
Run it
- Design (6 min): link four teacher-approved actions: a clear start, a balance or stable shape, a travelling or directional change, and a controlled range-of-motion moment.
- Offer choice (3 min): create at least two equivalent pathways, such as seated/standing or low-impact/travelling, that practise the same qualities.
- Rehearse (4 min): movers choose a pathway; observers track control, flow, range, and safety.
- Review (4 min): another group gives one evidence-based cue and checks that the adaptation preserves the goal.
- Refine (3 min): improve one transition or access feature and annotate why it is stronger.
Exit · Prove the Improvement
5 min- Name one change your group made to a movement or task.
- Use visible evidence to explain how it improved control, flow, flexibility, safety, or access.
- Explain one connection between the movement experience and another taha.

Health and Physical Education · Phase 3. Ākonga participate in and analyse teacher-selected movement drawn from gymnastics, dance, and obstacle-navigation foundations, then adapt and sequence it to improve flexibility, access, safety, flow, and overall movement quality. Mau rākau remains an appropriately guided context, not an improvised classroom technique.
Participation in activities like gymnastics, dance, parkour, and mau rākau supports increased flexibility, wellbeing, and overall movement quality.

- Floor markers, tape lines, stable chairs, and clear wall space if available.
- Station cards showing seated, standing, low-impact, observer, and designer pathways.

Before class: inspect the surface, spacing, chairs, routes, and equipment. Remove collision, trip, and unsupervised-height risks. Use only movements you can teach safely.

🚀 Extension & Adaptation
- More support: provide a four-card sequence to arrange and one observation focus at a time.
- More challenge: require three equivalent pathways and defend why each practises the same quality.
- Non-moving pathway: learners can direct, observe, annotate, or choreograph throughout and still meet all three intentions.
- Space-limited class: run the lab seated with upper-body shapes, range, rhythm, and transitions.
🔗 Unit Progression
Lesson 3 made values visible through action. This lesson applies the same evidence discipline to taha tinana and establishes body-neutral movement language. Lessons 5–7 deepen physical foundations through kai, accessible movement, and recovery without turning any one practice into a moral test of wellbeing.

Safety and inclusion

- Follow school physical-activity risk procedures. Stop the task if the environment, equipment, supervision, or learner feedback makes it unsafe.
