NCEA Level 2 Geography

Lesson 8: Mātauranga Māori & Sustainable Urban Futures

Demonstrating geographic understanding of urban spatial patterns, models, and processes.

🎯 Ngā Whāinga Akoranga | Learning Intentions

🧠 Students will know:

Māori urban design principles (Te Aranga Urban Design Principles: Mana, Taiao, Mauri Tu, Mahi Toi), papakāinga housing developments, and climate-resilient urban futures.

✏️ Students will demonstrate:

Evaluate urban development proposals against Te Aranga design outcomes, analyse papakāinga community housing models, and design a sustainable neighbourhood concept.

Te Aranga Māori Urban Design Principles

Video Clip: Sustainable cities and building climate-resilient urban futures (Runtime: 11m 19s).

🧠 1. Before Viewing (Activate & Predict)

How can indigenous spatial values (Te Aranga principles) transform modern cities to be ecologically resilient and culturally honouring?

👁️ 2. During Viewing (Watch With a Job)

  • Pause @ 1:40: Identify the 7 Te Aranga Māori Urban Design Principles (Mana, Whakapapa, Taiao, Mauri Tu, Mahi Toi, Tohu, Ahi Kā).
  • Pause @ 3:20: Examine papakāinga housing developments on ancestral land providing multi-generational communal living.
  • Pause @ 4:45: Analyse daylighting urban streams (awakeri) to restore ecological water health (mauri).

🗣️ 3. After Viewing & Kaiako Move (Process & Apply)

Kaiako Move: Connect Te Aranga principles with authentic local developments (e.g. Awataha Stream daylighting in Northcote; Hobsonville Point reserves).

Immediate Task: Complete Section 8 of your Geography Portfolio: Te Aranga Principles Evaluation & Papakāinga Case Study.

⚡ Whakaoho | Do Now: A Principle Is Not a Decoration

Think of a recent building you have seen carrying a Māori design element — a pattern, a name, a carving.

Two minutes: write down one question you would need answered before you could tell whether that design was meaningful or applied like a sticker. Today's framework exists to give you those questions, and the first one is usually who was involved in deciding.

📖 Activity 1: Learn the Seven, Then Test a Real Proposal

Put them in your own words (13 min). Work through the Te Aranga Māori Design Principles — Mana, Whakapapa, Taiao, Mauri Tū, Mahi Toi, Tohu, Ahi Kā. Write one sentence each on what the principle asks a designer to do. Mark clearly the points where mana whenua, not the designer, hold the answer.

Test something real (12 min). Take one Auckland development and assess it against three of the principles, stating the evidence you used. Where you have no evidence, write not stated. That is a finding about the development, not a blank in your work.

📝 Activity 2: Level 2 Geography Portfolio Task & Merit/Excellence Scaffolding (20 mins)

Portfolio Section 8. Submit: (1) the seven principles in your own words; (2) your assessment of one development against three of them, with evidence or not stated recorded against each; (3) a sustainable neighbourhood concept sketch that names which principles it answers — and names the relationships with mana whenua that would have to exist for it to be more than a drawing.
