Two minutes, two lists. First: what does heavy industry need from a site? Second: what does a flagship retail store need from a site?
Compare the lists. They barely overlap — and that non-overlap is most of the reason the city is arranged the way it is.
📖 Activity 1: Map the Industrial Nodes and the Retail Hierarchy
Locate industry (13 min). Plot Penrose, Mt Wellington, Wiri and Rosedale on your base map. For each, mark the three things that put it there: flat land, motorway or rail access, and distance from housing.
Rank retail (12 min). Now map the commercial hierarchy — CBD flagship, regional mall, town centre, local dairy — and draw the catchment you think each one serves. Where two catchments overlap, say which wins and what decides it.
📝 Activity 2: Level 2 Geography Portfolio Task & Merit/Excellence Scaffolding (20 mins)
Portfolio Section 5. Submit: (1) your industrial node map with three located reasons for each node; (2) your commercial hierarchy with catchments drawn; (3) a justification for one new industrial site you would select, using at least three spatial criteria — and one reason a planner might turn you down.
