Microscope work helps students understand that many important living structures are too small to see with the naked eye. In Aotearoa, that matters for plant science, environmental monitoring, health, and the careful observation practices used in both classroom and community science.
Evidence boundary: record only structures that are actually visible at the chosen magnification. A microscope observation can support a cellular claim; it cannot by itself establish cultural meaning, whakapapa, tikanga or local authority.

Kaiako supply: one compound light microscope per pair where possible, suitable prepared slides or teacher-approved specimens, clean slides and coverslips if making wet mounts, lens paper, disposable droppers, paper towels, and the school laboratory safety procedure. Model carrying, focusing from low power, slide handling and cleaning before ākonga begin. The handout supplies the method prompts and evidence spaces; it does not supply the physical equipment.
