Teacher-only planning note

This page is for teachers and kaiako. The checklist works best when it prepares students for real participation, not just the appearance of being busy.

A mātauranga Māori lens matters because kaitiakitanga, tikanga, and manaakitanga shape how action is carried out, who is consulted, and how the awa is treated during the work.

Strong fit

Students participate individually and collectively in response to community challenges.

How this handout aligns

The checklist turns intentions into a workable plan, which is exactly what makes school action projects more than symbolic.

Social StudiesCollective actionResponsibility

Most useful when the class is about to carry out an action, not just talk about one.

Bridge fit

Students manage themselves, plan collaboratively, and follow agreed processes safely.

How to use this resource

Keep role clarity and safety explicit. That is pedagogically important, especially for learners who need structure and predictable expectations.

Managing selfPlanningSafety

This is where the handout supports both classroom workflow and real-world responsibility.

Bridge fit

Students use discussion and review to decide what evidence of action needs to be gathered and shared.

Kaiako safeguard

Assign evidence roles deliberately. Students often act well but fail to document their learning unless this is planned.

EnglishDiscussionCommunication

This strengthens later reporting, reflection, and moderation conversations.
